The Maryland Lottery deemed Bally Bet and WynnBET qualified for mobile sports wagering licenses Thursday, a key step as the two operators look to enter Maryland’s newly launched mobile sports betting market.
Seven mobile sportsbooks (Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and PointsBet) went live in the state on Nov. 23. Marylanders took advantage of their presence, with geoComply reporting more than 16 million geolocation transactions from Nov. 23-27.
A few other operators — including Betfred, betPARX, and Fanatics — are expected to launch mobile sportsbooks in Maryland in early 2023. As for Bally Bet and WynnBET, those two operators still need to be awarded licenses by the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission before a potential mobile launch.
It’s expected that up to 21 mobile operators could be active in the state by the spring or summer of 2023.
Revenue report coming soon
Legal retail sportsbooks went live in Maryland in December 2021, so Marylanders have had access to that form of wagering for about a year. Mobile sports betting’s convenience makes it the method of choice for the majority of bettors, however.
With so many Marylanders wagering on mobile devices, there’s excitement from lottery officials and other stakeholders about how much tax revenue mobile betting can generate for the state. We’ll get a glimpse of how mobile wagering changes the market soon, as the lottery plans to release November’s revenue report on Dec. 12.
While November’s revenue report will only include a week of legal mobile wagering data, it’ll share some insight into how mobile sports betting has impacted the industry in the state. December’s revenue report, which will be released in January, will share data about the state’s first full month with mobile sports wagering.
