On Thursday, we have all the makings of a doozy in Columbus. The Ohio State Buckeyes will try to make it two straight losses for the top-ranked Boilermakers.
Ohio State Buckeyes -1.5
Ohio State comes into this one ranked 24th with three losses, but if you read closely into their record and resume, there may not be as much separation as you’d think between these two (hence why OSU is a short favorite). Ohio Stateβs three losses came at the hands of San Diego State, Duke, and North Carolina – three teams who should be highly-seeded clubs come March.Β
Ohio State has managed to pick up wins against Texas Tech and Rutgers – a win tonight would undoubtedly be the best on their resume.
Although they are barely ranked inside the Top 25, Ohio State ranks 9th in the most recent NET ratings and 11th in KenPomβs ratings. KenPom also has the Buckeyes rated as the second-most efficient offense in all of college basketball – the Buckeyes have a balanced offensive attack with five players averaging double figures.
Freshman sensation Brice Sensabaugh leads the way, averaging 15.9 points per game in just 21.8 minutes per game. Although they have a lot of juice on the offensive end, if Ohio State wants to pull off the upset, itβll have to start on defense.
In OSUβs three losses, theyβve relinquished 88, 81, and 89 points, respectively. Under head coach Matt Painter, Purdue is a well-oiled machine on offense – this will be one of the Buckeyes’ most challenging tasks yet.
Purdue Boilermakers +1.5
Purdue will try to rally after a tough loss at the hands of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this past Monday.
The Boilermakers rank 7th in the latest NET ratings and are tied for second in all college basketball with four Quad I wins. The Boilermakers have some of the most impressive wins in the country: theyβve topped Gonzaga, Duke, and Marquette.
Purdue will do everything it can to add to its resume with a win on Thursday night. Itβll all start with center Zach Edey. Edey is one of college basketballβs best – the 7β4″ Canadian is averaging 21.7 points per game, and 13.4 rebounds per game, which is second in all of college basketball.Β
While Ohio State has terrific guard play, like most teams, they arenβt going to have an answer for the mammoth of a man that is Zach Edey.
If Edey can stay out of foul trouble, Purdue should be able to produce plenty of points on the offensive end. KenPom has Purdue rated as the fifth-most efficient offense in Division I. Despite both teams playing at a relatively slow pace, itβs safe to say you can expect plenty of points in this one.
