Can Illinois Pick Up Their First Win in Big Ten Play?
Coming into this college basketball season, the Fighting Illini were pegged as one of the most intriguing teams to watch.
After Kofi Cockburn left school, head coach Brad Underwood decided to build this yearβs team from the transfer portal essentially. He acquired Terrence Shannon Jr. from Texas Tech and both Matthew Mayer and Dain Dainja from Baylor.
The Illini are full of talent, which has been on display in certain instances. They defeated UCLA and Texas in out-of-conference play, but their play has been streaky altogether. To open up Big Ten play, Illinois has decisively lost to Penn State and Northwestern while suffering a close loss to Maryland.
Not only is Illinois squandering its chances of being a top seed in March, but if the losses keep piling up, the Illini’s tournament resume may be put in jeopardy.
Wisconsin Eyeing 8th Straight Victory
After suffering one-possession losses to Kansas and Wake Forest in the non-conference slate, Wisconsin has bounced back remarkably with eight straight victories. In that span, theyβve defeated Marquette, Maryland, and Iowa.
Wisconsin has been so tough to beat because of the balanced attack they play with on the offensive end. Their top scorer, Tyler Wahl, only averages 13.2 points per game, but they have three other scorers averaging double figures.
Additionally, Wisconsin comes in as the 21st-ranked defense in terms of efficiency by KenPomβs rankings. Under head coach Greg Gard, Wisconsin has always been a team built around defense and taking good care of the basketball. If thereβs one thing you can count on from Wisconsin, they arenβt going to beat themselves.
Illinois Has Won Last Four Matchups Against Wisconsin
Dating back to 2018-2019, Wisconsin has yet to pick up a victory against the Fighting Illini.
Besides a few key players on each side, these trends can be wonky year-to-year, considering the turnover on college basketball rosters. But maybe Illinois coach Brad Underwood happens to have Greg Gardβs number?Β
If Underwood wants to pick up his first win in the Big Ten, he will need his team to play a clean game, limiting turnovers and second-chance opportunities on the glass for Wisconsin.
