Given the success of dominant clubs such as the Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Boston Red Sox in recent years, the Philadelphia Phillies’ improbable journey to the World Series stands in stark contrast to the aforementioned trio.
The first three teams captured the World Series after winning at a 62%+ clip in the regular season. The Astros and Red Sox posted 100+ win seasons in 2017 and 2018, respectively, en route to World Series titles. The Dodgers, meanwhile, went 43-17 (71.6%) in a COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, a mark that translates to 116 wins over a full 162-game season.
Conversely, the 87-win Phillies (53.7%) have the fewest regular-season wins by a World Series club since the Cardinals in 2006. In that year, St. Louis defeated the Tigers following an uneven regular season in which the Cardinals won only 83 games.
Now, the Phillies will take on the heavily favored Astros in the 2022 World Series, which begins on Friday night in Houston. While the Astros were among the American League favorites to make it to the World Series at the start of the season, the Phillies largely defied expectations in the National League.
One bettor at @BetMGM wagered $50 on the Astros to beat the Phillies in the #WorldSeries at 2500-1 odds back in April, per @johnewing.
Bet would win $125,000 and is now VERY much alive

The Astros enter Friday’s World Series opener as a -165 moneyline favorite at BetMGM over the upstart Phils (+140) in Game 1 of the World Series. The matchup features a pair of All-Star pitchers, as two-time American League Cy Young winner Justin Verlander takes the mound against Phillies’ starter Aaron Nola.

The Astros won 106 games in the regular season, 19 more than the Phillies. The disparity in wins is reminiscent of the 2019 World Series, when the Astros captured 107 regular-season games, 14 more victories than the Washington Nationals, the NL champs. Despite opening the series as considerable underdogs, the Nats prevailed in seven games.

Roof closed for Game 1
With forecasts calling for a 90% chance of rain Friday night, the roof at Minute Maid Park will be closed for Game 1, ESPN reported. There is also a strong likelihood that the roof will be closed again for Saturday night’s Game 2.
Some baseball experts believe that fly balls carry farther when the roof is closed. For instance, the Yankees claimed that a drive from Aaron Judge in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series would have carried far enough for a home run if Major League Baseball officials decided to close the roof. Kyle Schwarber has odds of +270 to hit at least one home run in Friday’s opener, the best odds for a player from either team.
Schwarber, the National League regular-season home run champ, blasted a 488-foot home run in Game 1 of the NLCS. The homer, which had an exit velocity of 119.7 mph, is the longest home run at Petco Park in the Statcast era. It is also the hardest-hit playoff home run since MLB began tracking exit velocity with the Statcast technology.
For fans of micro betting, there could have been some tasty props on #Schwaber's mammoth HR last night
Will anyone homer w an exit velocity of 119 mph+? YES: +1000
Will a player hit the longest homer in Petco Park history? YES: +2000@JeffPassan @DavidPurdum #GamblingTwitter https://t.co/bUKCvypeXX

Two of Schwarber’s teammates, Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins, have odds of +340 and +400, respectively, to record at least one homer on Friday night. Harper sent the Phillies to the World Series with a two-run, go-ahead homer in the eighth inning of a Game 5 win over the Padres. Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez has odds of +300 at BetMGM to hit a home run on Friday.
The Astros swept the Yankees in four games in the ALCS following a three-game defeat of the Mariners in the ALDS. With a sweep of the Phillies, Houston would become the first team since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds to finish an MLB postseason unbeaten. Nicknamed the Big Red Machine, the Reds swept the Yankees with an imposing lineup that included the likes of Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and George Foster. The Astros have odds of +750 to defeat the Phillies in a four-game sweep.
