Game 2 is shaping up to be a dandy with two aces on the mound in Zack Wheeler and Framber Valdez.
Despite his dominance, Valdez has struggled on the big stage. Valdez made his lone career appearance in the World Series last season and, in two outings, was 0-1 with a 19.29 ERA, relinquishing ten runs in just four 2/3 innings pitched. Time will tell if this was just a rough series for the southpaw – he’ll have his work cut for him against a high-octane Phillies lineup.
On the other side, this will be Zack Wheeler’s first career World Series start. Wheeler was a member of the 2015 Mets team that lost in the World Series to the Kansas City Royals, but he did not pitch that series due to injury.
Wheeler has been remarkable this postseason with a 1-1 record and 1.78 ERA in four starts. Rather than ride his horse for Game 1, manager Rob Thomson elected to move Wheeler back in the rotation a day to give him an extra day of rest while setting up a potential Wheeler vs. Valdez rematch in a pivotal Game 6 back at Minute Maid Park.
At the plate, there are several headliners on both sides. The Astros are led by Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman. In 2022, Houston was 4th in all of baseball in home runs but 31st (2nd fewest) in team strikeouts. Their lineup has an incredible ability to hit the long ball while being patient at the plate – a lethal combination.
For Philadelphia, it’s all about Bryce Harper. Harper, the 2021 NL MVP, has been one of the biggest stories this postseason as he hit a game-clinching 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th inning of Game 5 to send Philadelphia to the World Series.
Outside of Harper, the Phillies will be counting on offseason acquisitions Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos, as well as JT Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins, and Alec Bohm, to keep pace with the powerful lineup of Houston.
