ALDS Game 5 betting preview
It all comes down to Game 5 at Yankee Stadium. After staving off elimination in Sunday’s 4-2 win at Progressive Field, the Bronx Bombers will face one last obstacle as they attempt to return to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2019. If New York manages to advance, they’d be headed on a collision course to meet the rival Houston Astros in the ALCS for the third time in six seasons. As for Cleveland, they’re gunning for their first ALCS appearance since 2016, the same season in which they fell to the Chicago Cubs in Game 7 of the World Series.
Following yesterday’s rain delay that pushed Game 5 to this afternoon, Guardians manager Terry Francona curiously opted to stick with RHP Aaron Civale in favor of the team’s clearcut ace in RHP Shane Bieber. Bieber is supposedly available for Game 5 if necessary, however he will begin his afternoon in the dugout rather than on the mound. Francona’s decision to roll with Civale is an interesting one to say the least, and could very well end up costing Cleveland a trip to the ALCS.
Civale was tagged in his most recent start against the Yankees back on July 2nd, tossing six innings with five hits, four earned runs, and two homeruns surrendered. Rewind all the way back to April 24th, Civale was punished even worse in his lone start at Yankee Stadium, getting shelled for six runs on seven hits over three innings pitched. Aside from Harrison Bader and Oswaldo Cabrera (who have yet to face Civale), every single Yankee in today’s starting lineup has at least one hit off of Civale.
LHP Nestor Cortes, who will be making the start for New York on short rest, has been quite the opposite of his counterpart this afternoon. Cortes has been dominant on the mound as of late, posting a 1.79 ERA and minuscule 0.69 WHIP over his last seven starts. Cortes is also 6-0 with a 1.82 ERA in day games this season, and has shined when pitching in front of the home crowd with a 6-1 record and 1.95 ERA in 15 starts at Yankee Stadium. Despite taking a no-decision in Friday’s 4-2 loss in Game 2, Cortes has essentially dominated the Guardians in 2022, logging 17.1 innings across three total starts while surrendering just 10 hits and five earned runs to go along with 17 strikeouts.
