Super Bowl MVP: The Favorites

It should be no surprise that the two frontrunners for the NFL’s MVP award are indeed the frontrunners to hoist the Super Bowl MVP Trophy. Both Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts have odds of +135 at BetMGM Sportsbook to win the SB MVP.

Mahomes has been immaculate in his first year without Tyreek Hill, throwing for the second most yards and touchdowns of his career, only trailing his MVP campaign in 2018. He will have a tough challenge against a Philadelphia defense that leads the league in sacks and is 1st in pass defense DVOA, and 1st in EPA per dropback.

Hurts did not put up the passing stats of Mahomes, but the combination of Hurts’ throwing and his prowess on the ground makes him a viable candidate to take home the MVP. Hurts hasn’t done much damage through the air in his two playoff games, but the Eagles have also had positive game scripts that were essentially decided at halftime. Hurts gets a favorable matchup in this one against an inexperienced Chiefs’ secondary that could have as many as three rookie starters in the Super Bowl.

  • Jalen Hurts Super Bowl MVP +135
  • Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl MVP +135

BetMGM Super Bowl MVP Odds for Top Receivers

If you want to look at some top options outside the QBs, look no further than their pass catchers! Each team has an All-Pro pass catcher, and oh yeah, don’t forget about the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner.Β

Travis Kelce (+1100), AJ Brown (+1400), and Devonta Smith (+3000) are all good candidates to win the SB MVP. If we were to look at a position that’s most likely to win outside the QB, it’s WR (we’re considering Kelce a WR here due to his role in KC’s offense). Two of the last four Super Bowl MVP winners have been WRs, including last year’s MVP, Cooper Kupp.Β

If you want to date it back even further, five of the last 18 winners have been WRs, good for a 27.78% hit rate. All three of these guys can break this game open.Β

  • Travis Kelce Super Bowl MVP +1100
  • AJ Brown Super Bowl MVP +1400
  • Devonta Smith Super Bowl MVP +3000

Defensive Players for Super Bowl MVP

We wouldn’t be doing this article any justice if we didn’t provide some love for two of the game’s best pass rushers. Chris Jones (+5000) and Haason Reddick (+3000) were also All-Pros this past season, and each is in the midst of a career year.

Jones had one of the best games of his career in the AFC Championship, generating two sacks and eight pressures against one of the league’s top signal callers, Joe Burrow. Reddick has been on an absolute tear this postseason, producing 3.5 sacks through two games, including a forced fumble in the NFC Championship Game that helped create some separation.

Two of the past seven “Big Game” MVPs have been defensive players, one of which was also an elite pass rusher (Von Miller). Reddick primarily lines up on the offense’s right side, which means he’ll be slated against Chiefs right tackle Andrew Wylie for most of the game. Wylie is not a liability, but he is definitely the Chiefs’ weak spot.

Chris Jones will be up against a tough Eagles’ interior led by All-Pro center Jason Kelce. However, he may have some favorable matchups against Philly’s guards. Landon Dickerson turned in his first career Pro Bowl but will be playing with a hyperextended elbow injury in the Super Bowl. On the other side, Isaac Seumalo is the Eagles’ weakest link of their five starters.

  • Haasan Reddick Super Bowl MVP +3000
  • Chris Jones Super Bowl MVP +5000

Dark Horses for Super Bowl MVP Betting

The candidates above will be some of the most popular MVP picks, but there’s nothing wrong with a dart throw here and there. Let’s give you one from each team to look at.

Kenneth Gainwell (+12500) and JuJu Smith-Schuster (+6600) are two potential “Dark Horse” candidates available through BetMGM. Now, with long-shot MVP picks, you don’t want to get too crazy and pick guys with virtually no chance.

Through two postseason games, Gainwell has logged the most snaps among the Eagles’ three running backs and has amassed 196 total yards and a touchdown. Gainwell is the team’s best receiving back and has gained plenty of momentum as a pure runner in the latter half of the year. For the NFL’s best-rushing offense, they have a favorable matchup on paper against an average run defense. If the Eagles can mount a lead and have a positive game script, don’t be surprised if head coach Nick Sirianni leans on Gainwell to gain those tough yards in the second half, just like the past two playoff games.

Smith-Schuster was one of the Chiefs’ many additions to their receiving corps after Tyreek Hill was traded. Smith-Schuster has been plagued with injuries in his first year in Kansas City, including a concussion scare in the AFC title game. As we write this, JuJu is questionable heading into the Super Bowl, so be sure to monitor his health status heading into this one.

But if JuJu can go, it is certainly within the range of outcomes that he explodes in this one. Smith-Schuster was gaining some serious chemistry with Mahomes early in the season. Between weeks 6-8, Smith-Schuster generated 25 catches, 315 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. Injuries seemed to slow down his season.

However, if JuJu can get back to that midseason form, watch out. The Eagles have been solid against opposing tight ends, as the number four rated defense in DVOA vs. TEs. If Kelce is facing consistent double teams, a JuJu game may be in the cards.

  • Kenneth Gainwell Super Bowl MVP +12500
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster Super Bowl MVP +6600
