Tonight we have plenty of elite college basketball matchups on tap across the board. In Ames, Iowa, we have the only matchup of the night between two Top-12 teams in the nation, where Texas will collide with Iowa State.
Both teams can space the floor, are built on the defensive side, and are pretty equal in caliber. Texas has had an up-and-down season with the firing of former head coach Chris Beard looming over this team, but they’ve answered the controversy with plenty of wins.
Iowa State has been one of college basketball’s biggest surprises and is right on Kansas’ toes at the top of the Big 12.

Iowa State Cyclones -3 at BetMGM
Head coach TJ Otzelberger has made significant strides in his first two years at Ames.
In year one, he took the Cyclones to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2015-16. And in year two, the Cyclones have slowly climbed the ranks and are currently slated as the 12th-best squad in the country.
Iowa State has won six of their last seven. Their previous game was the lone loss, but it was certainly an encouraging result. Iowa State went to Allen Fieldhouse, one of the most hostile environments in the nation, and took No. 2 Kansas down to the wire and only lost by 2 points, 62-60.
In Big 12 play, Iowa State has picked up wins over TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Baylor. A win tonight would add to an already impressive resume in conference play.
Jaren Holmes leads the way – the Cyclones’ leading scorer averages 12.8 points per game. But for Iowa State, it starts on the defensive side of the court. According to KenPom rankings, Iowa State comes into this matchup fifth in defensive efficiency among all Division I teams (363 teams). Iowa State plays a tough brand of basketball – their identity is built around defense and rebounding, and having played at one of the slowest tempos in the country, they often grind down their opponents.
Texas Longhorns +3 with BetMGM Sportsbook
As mentioned above, Texas has had a rollercoaster of a season with the abrupt firing of Chris Beard, but they’ve mitigated the distraction about as best as you could hope.
Coming into this matchup, the Longhorns are winners of three straight. Texas has one of the best resumes in the nation – they’ve tallied wins against Gonzaga, Creighton, TCU, and Texas Tech. The Longhorns are a tough matchup for any team – they’re experienced, one of the more stout defensive units in college basketball, and they have three dynamic guards. Marcus Carr, Iowa State transfer Tyrese Hunter, and Sir’Jabari Rice make up one of the best backcourts in the country.
They will have their work cut out for them against one of the best defensive teams in the country in a brutal road environment.
