The Armed Forces Classic has been a staple in college basketball since it first debuted in Germany back in 2012, but this year’s rendition of the event should be extra special as it marks the first time the game will take place on water. It is also just the second time the game will be played on U.S. soil, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans (1-0, 0-1 ATS) will take center stage in the Classic for the third time since its inception, while Mark Few’s Gonzaga Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 ATS) will compete in the event for the second time in program history.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
The No. 2 ranked Bulldogs should be out for blood this season after they fell to the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Sweet 16 during last year’s NCAA Tournament as the #1 overall seed. The Bulldogs do return two-time Consensus All-American forward Drew Timme, who has solidified his place as one of the sport’s best, but will have some major holes to fill as they lost a pair of top NBA Draft picks in F/C Chet Holmgren (2nd overall) and G Andrew Nembhard (31st overall). Aside from those two key losses, the Zags also return a trio of experienced upperclassmen in G Julian Strawther, G Rasir Bolton, and F Anton Watson, while hoping to get more out of sophomores Hunter Sallis and Nolan Hickman. Junior guard Malachi Smith out of Chattanooga was the team’s biggest transfer over the offseason and has already made his presence felt in Spokane, dropping 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists off the bench in Gonzaga’s 104-63 win over North Florida on opening night.
BetMGM currently has Gonzaga as the joint-favorite to win the National Championship at +900.
Michigan State Spartans
As for Tom Izzo’s Spartans, they’ll be looking to retool a bit themselves after losing their top three scorers in senior forwards Gabe Brown and Marcus Bingham and freshman guard Max Christie, who left for the NBA after just one season in East Lansing. Michigan State will now rely on veterans Tyson Walker, AJ Hoggard, Joey Hauser, and Malik Hall to guide the rest of their young roster, which features a pair of talented freshmen in F Jaxon Kohler and G Tre Holloman. Sparty might’ve failed to cover the 21-point spread in its home opener against Northern Arizona, but it was a convincing win to say the least, and Tom Izzo should have no problem getting his group back where it belongs year in and year out: March.
On the futures front, BetMGM currently lists Michigan State at +5000 to win it all.
