South Alabama -3.5 at BetMGM
The South Alabama Jaguars are a short favorite against the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. In head coach Kane Wommack’s second season, he led the Jags to their most wins in program history with 10 while also clinching their third bowl appearance ever.
In South Alabama’s two losses, they fell by a combined five points – one of which was a heartbreaking one-point loss at UCLA, and the other against conference foe and Sun Belt champion, Troy.
It all starts on defense for the Jaguars – under Kane Wommack, South Alabama only allows 90 rushing yards per game, which is 4th in all of FBS. While their defense is loaded, their offense is no slouch, either. Behind quarterback Carter Bradley, a Toledo transfer, South Alabama eclipsed 27 points or more in each of their last five games.
Running back La’Damian Webb leads the rushing attack with 1,074 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns on the season.
South Alabama has plenty of motivation for this one. They have no opt-outs and will look to finish the best season in their program’s history with their first-ever bowl win over one of the nation’s most high-octane offensive attacks.
Western Kentucky +3.5 with BetMGM
Conversely, Western Kentucky has deployed one of the most lethal and effective air-raid attacks in college football over the past half-decade behind NFL quarterbacks Mike White and Bailey Zappe. It is finding newfound success with Division II West Florida transfer Austin Reed.
Reed is second in all of college football with 4,247 passing yards and 36 touchdowns on the year. However, unlike South Alabama, the Hilltoppers will have to deal with some tough opt-outs, including their top two offensive linemen, Gunner Britton and Rusty Staats. In addition, top cornerback Kahlef Hailassie is opting out to prepare for the NFL Draft, as is starting receiver Daewood Davis.
With a win, head coach Tyson Helton would move to an impressive 3-1 in bowl games since he assumed the head coaching position in 2019.
