Boston Celtics -3 at Caesars
The Celtics are winners of four straight as they are coming off a home victory over the New Orleans Pelicans last night, 125-114. After this win, the Celtics have won eight of their last ten games overall and currently hold the best record in the NBA at 30-12.
In addition to boasting the best record in the NBA, the Celtics hold the best point differential in the league, winning by an average margin of 6.0 points per game. Boston is second in the NBA, only behind the Sacramento Kings, in terms of scoring offense, averaging 118.6 points per game.
Jayson Tatum has set the tone with a career year, averaging 30.8 points per game. Not far behind is Jaylen Brown, averaging a career-high 27.2 points per game (coming off a season-high 41 points in last night’s win). The young backcourt has formed arguably the league’s best duo. But outside this backcourt, Boston has a wealth of depth they can rely on. Offseason acquisition Malcolm Brogdon has been a reliable third-scoring option, while Marcus Smart, Derrick White, and Al Horford have all picked up their fair share of slack.
The obvious matchup to watch here will be Tatum versus Irving. But outside these headliners, watch out for how the depth of Boston clashes with Brooklyn’s, which is one of the few teams keeping up with the Celtics’ ancillary options.
Brooklyn Nets +3 with Caesars Sportsbook
Brooklyn comes into this one as the hottest team in the NBA, winning 14 of their last 15 games.
They’ve leaned heavily on superstar Kevin Durant to carry the load, but will now face another major test as he will be sidelined for at least a few weeks with a sprained MCL. Durant is 6th in the NBA in scoring, averaging 29.7 points per game. As it stands, Durant has the 6th highest odds on Caesars to hoist the MVP Trophy (+1400) despite the recent injury.
Brooklyn will rely heavily on Durant’s right-hand man, Kyrie Irving. The 7x All-Star is averaging 26 points per game, but he should have his hands full with a looming matchup against reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart on deck.
Like Boston, Brooklyn will need their secondary options to come ready to play if they want to pull off the upset. Offseason addition TJ Warren has emerged as another scoring option alongside Irving, as he’s reached double figures in seven of his last nine games. Warren produced gaudy numbers in the NBA Bubble in 2020 but missed most of the previous two years due to injury. With a healthy Warren and an aggressive Ben Simmons, Brooklyn becomes the biggest threat to challenging Boston’s crown in the Eastern Conference.
