Wisconsin Badgers -4.5 at Caesars Sportsbook
The Wisconsin Badgers (6-6, 5-7 ATS) will enter tonight’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl fresh off a massive head coaching change and a slew of opt-outs from transferring players and NFL Draft hopefuls throughout the roster.
After nearly eight strong seasons led by ex-HC Paul Chryst, the Badgers decided to move on following the team’s poor 2-3 start to the 2022 campaign. Interim HC Jim Leonhard took over for Chryst and finished the season on a high note, guiding the Badgers to a 4-3 overall record to finish 6-6 and clinch a bowl berth for the 21st consecutive season. Leonhard will get one more crack at leading the Badgers tonight in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl while the recently-hired Luke Fickell watches from the sidelines. Although the former Cincinnati head coach will be taking the reins in Madison starting in 2023, Leonhard will call most of the shots in tonight’s bowl game.
With starting quarterback Graham Mertz off to Florida after entering the transfer portal, the Badgers’ offense is undoubtably going to look a bit different against Oklahoma State. The team has yet to announce a starter in Mertz’s absence, however it will come down to either senior Chase Wolf or freshman Myles Burkett. Look for either of Wisconsin’s inexperienced backups to lean on superstar RB Braelon Allen, who topped 90+ yards on the ground in five of six contests to round out the season and will be ready to go in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.
Oklahoma State Cowboys +4.5 with Caesars
Similar to the Badgers, the Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-5, 6-6 ATS) will also be dealing with their fair share of roster changes ahead of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Longtime HC Mike Gundy will look to work around these moves as he seeks out his sixth bowl victory over the last seven seasons.
Oklahoma State has been nothing short of a bowl-season mainstay under Gundy, as the 18-year head man in Stillwater has managed to guide his team to a bowl berth in each of the last 17 seasons. The last time Gundy’s Cowboys missed a bowl game was all the way back in 2005, Gundy’s first season as a head coach.
Tonight’s battle in Phoenix should present somewhat of a challenge for Gundy and his staff, as they’ll be forced to turn to a pair of freshman quarterbacks in Garret Rangel and Gunnar Gundy following the departure of superstar gunslinger Spencer Sanders via the transfer portal. The four-year senior was also joined in the portal by Oklahoma State’s leading rusher in RB Dominic Richardson and leading tackler on defense in LB Mason Cobb, leaving plenty of opportunity on the table for the remaining members of Gundy’s squad.
