Hawaii vs Vanderbilt betting preview
The stage is set for Saturday night in Honolulu, Hawaii as the Rainbow Warriors and rookie HC Timmy Chang get set to defend their home field at Aloha Stadium for the first time during the 2022 campaign. Their challenger on opening night is none other than the Vanderbilt Commodores, hailing out of the illustrious Southeastern Conference and led by second-year HC Clark Lea. Caesars Sportsbook currently has Vanderbilt listed as 9-point favorites for the matchup, while Hawaii is up to a whopping +285 on the moneyline. Bettors can find a ton of props, markets, and other ways to bet on the game over at Caesars, along with odds for every other college football game taking place during Week 0. Let’s get into the participants:
Vanderbilt Commodores -9
Entering the new year fresh off of an abysmal 2-10 season, Clark Lea and the Commodores have a massive opportunity in front of them on Saturday night as 9-point favorites. The program hasn’t won a conference game since 2019 and stands at just 5-28 overall since then but should have the upper hand against an extremely inexperienced and depleted Hawaii roster. Vanderbilt’s offense will be led by junior dual-threat QB Mike Wright, junior WR Will Sheppard, and a slew of other experienced weapons, while its defense should get a boost from the addition of Clemson LB Kane Patterson.
Travel is obviously the biggest concern for any team heading out to Aloha Stadium at any point in the season, however it is worth noting that Vanderbilt arrived to the island a week in advance and has been practicing and preparing for the game while getting accustomed to the timezone. Faced with a schedule that isn’t going to get any easier moving forward and coupled with the fact that they return 67% of the team’s production from last season, the Commodores have no excuses – they should win this game.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors +9
Timmy Chang and the Rainbow Warriors will be entering the new campaign with a major challenge on their hands. Prior to former HC Todd Graham’s resignation back in January, a whopping 19 different Hawaii players hit the transfer portal and took their talents elsewhere. Among those that left the program were starting QB Chevan Cordeiro, RB Dae Dae Hunter, the team’s leading receiver Nick Mardner, and the team’s leading tackler Darius Muasau. Hawaii’s returning production ranks dead last among all FBS teams and it’s clear that Chang is about to undergo a lengthy rebuild of the program that he previously set records for. While it can be extremely difficult to put any faith into such a depleted roster, it’s important not to jump the gun and overreact.
Regardless of how good or bad Hawaii is going to be, Vanderbilt only won two games last season – each by three points or less to incredibly weak competition. Their first win came on the road to a 3-9 Colorado State team that surrendered 50 points to Hawaii later that year, while the second was a 30-28 nail-biter against one of the worst college football programs in recent memory in UConn. It may be a completely different group of players this time around, but Hawaii managed to knock off #18 Fresno State at home last season while also keeping it close against an extremely talented San Diego State team. The Rainbow Warriors are certainly live at home and the crowd should feed off of their former star quarterback’s head coaching debut on Saturday night.
