This will be the first time these two Eastern Conference foes have faced off against one another. After this game, they will have two more matchups against each other. Letβs dive into some of the gameβs biggest storylines.
Can Columbus Start a New Streak of Sorts?
Although the Blue Jackets come into this one with the fewest points in the Eastern Conference and are tied for the second-fewest in the entire NHL, Columbus is coming off a win. It was against the only team with fewer points than them in the Chicago Blackhawks. But Columbus put together one of their best performances in weeks.
Columbus has a team in the cellar of the Metropolitan standings, but this is, in large part, because of their recent seven-game losing streak that put them in that position. Columbus has struggled to put the puck in the net, ranking 29th in the NHL in goals scored.Β
Most of this isnβt on Columbus, as forward Zach Werenski is out for the season, and Boone Jenner has been out for a month with a thumb injury.
But despite these injuries, maybe Columbusβs recent four-goal performance against Chicago can jumpstart a resurgence from the offense. Free agent acquisition Johnny Gaudreau was able to chip in two assists in the win, with Gustav Nyquist racking up two short-handed goals.
Can Columbus Slow Down the Senatorsβ Power Play?
The Senators had high expectations to take the next step from their rebuild into a perennial playoff team in the east. That hasnβt necessarily come together, but you can see the sheer firepower and talent on display this Ottawa team has on their power play.
The Senators are fourth in the NHL in power play percentage at a staggering 27.7%. Offseason acquisitions Alex DeBrincat and Claude Giroux are two names to watch out for, while winger Drake Batherson leads the team with nine power play goals on the year.
Patrik Laine Return
Forward Patrik Laine missed last Saturdayβs contest due to health issues. Laine has only been able to skate for 20 games this season because of those ongoing issues. But he was able to clear COVID-19 protocols and should be on the ice tonight for Columbus.
Although Laineβs tenure as a Blue Jacket hasnβt been what everyone had hoped for up to date, the addition of Laine for an injury-plagued Columbus team could be a massive jolt to help them pull off the upset tonight.
