Tuesday Night College Basketball betting preview

Tonight’s college basketball schedule is loaded to say the very least, with seven ranked teams in action and plenty of Power Six clashes on tap. Between the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and the Big East-Big 12 Battle, college hoops enthusiasts will get a good look at how some of the nation’s top teams stack up against one another. Let’s get into our top games of the night. All game odds provided by FanDuel Sportsbook.

Syracuse Orange (+12.5) at No. 16 Illinois Fighting Illini (143.5)

HC Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Orange (3-3, 2-4 ATS) will look to shake off the rust from back-to-back losses as they trek into Champaign and take on the No. 16 Illinois Fighting Illini (5-1, 3-2-1 ATS) tonight at 7:30pm ET on ESPN.

The Orange made headlines following Saturday’s 73-72 loss at home to the Bryant Bulldogs as a 9.5-point favorite, which resulted in a pair of ejections after freshman G Judah Mintz got into it with Bryant G Doug Edert. The loss dropped Syracuse to 3-3 overall on the young season, and marked the Orange’s second loss to a mid-major at home thus far after they were also blown out by Colgate, 80-68. To make matters even worse, Boeheim’s patented zone defense has been absolutely blitzed this season, as Syracuse currently ranks 202nd in the nation with 70 points allowed per game.

Brad Underwood’s Fighting Illini have enjoyed a solid start to the 2022-23 campaign, including a big win over No. 8 UCLA in Las Vegas. The Illini suffered its only loss on a neutral court against now-No. 3 Virginia, who held Illinois to a season-low 61 points that night. Although much-improved, Virginia has always played a similar brand of basketball as Syracuse, which could present problems for the Illini in a game that appears to be a rout according to the spread. Take the massive number and ride with Syracuse to keep this one relatively close throughout.

No. 6 Baylor Bears (-6.5) at Marquette Golden Eagles (154.5)

Up next on tonight’s card is an intriguing matchup between Scott Drew’s No. 6 Baylor Bears (5-1, 3-3 ATS) and Shaka Smart’s Marquette Golden Eagles (5-2, 4-2-1 ATS). The game is set to tip-off from the Fiserv Forum at 8:30pm ET on FS1.

The No. 6-ranked Bears picked up a huge bounce-back win over No. 8 UCLA after suffering their first loss of the season to Virginia, 86-79. They followed up that effort with a beatdown of lowly McNeese and will now look for their third consecutive win as they head into Milwaukee tonight. Upperclassmen Adam Flagler and LJ Cryer have carried the load for Baylor, while freshman superstar Keyonte George has looked comfortable right out of the gate, posting double-digit points in five of his six career starts thus far.

As for Marquette, they will be in search of a third consecutive win as well after taking down Georgia Tech and Chicago State in their previous two contests. The Golden Eagles run a sound unit that mesh well together, as each of the team’s top-six scorers played for Marquette last season. They are very much a work in progress following the losses of 2021-22 Big East Most Improved Player Justin Lewis and super-senior guard Darryl Morsell; however, the pieces are there and developing each and every game. Shaka Smart has also been a fine underdog since taking over at Marquette, posting a 12-6-2 record ATS when garnering any sort of points. Specifically looking at home games, the Golden Eagles are 4-2 ATS as a home underdog in Smart’s first two seasons as the head man.

No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers (-3.5) at Michigan Wolverines (128.5)

Rounding out this exciting night of college hoops action is a must-see meeting between the newly-crowned No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers (5-0, 3-2 ATS) and the unranked Michigan Wolverines (5-1, 2-4 ATS). Tony Bennett’s undefeated squad will look to build on its incredible start as they head into Ann Arbor tonight at 9:30pm ET on ESPN.

Virginia has quickly become one of the biggest stories in all of college basketball after knocking off No. 5 Baylor and No. 19 Illinois in back-to-back games at the Main Event in Las Vegas. The Hoos have skyrocketed from No. 18 in the nation to No. 3 in a matter of a few weeks and will now face another tough test in their first true road game of the season. Their opponent will be none other than Juwan Howard’s Wolverines, who enter tonight’s matchup unranked after suffering a blowout loss to Arizona State at the Legends Classic in Brooklyn, 87-62.

Michigan also escaped an overtime scare at home against the Ohio Bobcats following their loss to ASU, making it more than clear that Wolverines are still adjusting to life without Eli Brooks, DeVante Jones, Caleb Houstan, Moussa Diabate, Brandon Johns Jr., and Frankie Collins. Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn has struggled to get going since making the jump from the Ivy League to a Big Ten team, averaging just 7.7 points per game and topping double-digit points just twice through six games. Michigan will need a lot more out of Llewellyn and underclassmen guards Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard if they want to turn things around before conference play begins.

Regardless of Michigan’s early-season growing pains, the program has been one of college basketball’s best as of late and is certainly worth a stab when getting points at home. Virginia has impressed thus far no doubt, but it might be a bit too early to rank them as high as No. 3 and have them laying a considerable number in a true road game. And while Howard has had much better rosters over the years, his Michigan teams are a clean 2-0 ATS as a home underdog – a situation you will rarely find the Wolverines in.
