Bahamas Bowl game details + betting preview

  • Date: Friday, December 16, 2022
  • Start Time: 11:30am ET
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Location: Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas
  • Participants: Miami (OH) Redhawks (6-6) vs UAB Blazers (6-6)
  • FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: UAB -10.5 (-115), O/U 45.5

Miami (OH) Redhawks +10.5 (-105) at FanDuel

It certainly wasn’t easy, but HC Chuck Martin’s Miami (OH) Redhawks (6-6, 5-7 ATS) managed to qualify for bowl eligibility at the last possible second. Following a poor 3-5 start to the season, the Redhawks closed out the 2022 campaign by winning three out of four to punch their ticket into bowl season.

Miami’s trip to the Bahamas Bowl will mark Martin’s fourth bowl appearance in nine seasons as head coach of the Redhawks, and his third in the last four seasons. After finishing last season at 6-6 overall as well, the Redhawks went on to defeat a scrappy North Texas team in the Frisco Football Classic to notch Martin’s first bowl win during his tenure with the program. Martin and the Redhawks will now look to repeat last year’s bowl result as a hefty double-digit dog against the UAB Blazers out of Conference USA.

Miami (OH) will once again turn to freshman QB Aveon Smith in this one, who started in both of the Redhawks’ wins over Northern Illinois and Ball State to finish out the season. Smith stepped in to replace junior QB Brett Gabbert, who was injured on the final play of Miami’s 37-21 home loss to Ohio back on November 8 and has since entered his name into the transfer portal.

UAB Blazers -10.5 (-115) with FanDuel Sportsbook

The UAB Blazers (6-6, 4-8 ATS) also managed to squeak out a bowl berth after a rough start to the season. Sitting at 4-5 overall, UAB took down both North Texas and Louisiana Tech in two of its final three contests to clinch a bowl berth in HC Bryant Vincent’s first season leading the program. The Bahamas Bowl will mark UAB’s fifth bowl appearance in the last six seasons – the Blazers did qualify in 2020 as well, however their bowl game against South Carolina was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The Blazers jump out as a hefty 10.5-point favorite in this one over at FanDuel Sportsbook, which might come as a surprise to some considering the team’s abysmal 4-8 record ATS in 2022. UAB was the worst team at covering the spread in all of Conference USA, failing to cover the number in 66% of its games this season.

Things aren’t going to get any easier without superstar RB DeWayne McBride, who has officially opted out of the Bahamas Bowl as he prepares for the 2023 NFL Draft. McBride, who led the entire nation in rushing yards this season with 1,713 and finished second in rushing touchdowns with 19, was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year and will be incredibly difficult to replace. Although he’ll have massive shoes to fill, the Blazers will turn to junior RB Jermaine Brown Jr. to handle the heavy lifting on the ground against the Redhawks.
