San Francisco 49ers -9.5
The San Francisco 49ers (5-4, 4-5 ATS) will be in search of their third consecutive victory tonight as they take the field at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico. Currently holding sole possession of the 7th and final playoff spot in the NFC, a win tonight for San Francisco would not only greatly improve their chances of qualifying for the postseason, but also pull them into a tie with the 6-4 Seattle Seahawks for first place in the NFC West.
San Francisco enters tonight’s matchup coming off a close, come-from-behind victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football in Week 10. Trailing 16-10 at halftime, the 49ers blanked the Chargers 12-0 in the final 30 minutes to escape with a 22-16 win. They will now hope for an even better result against an Arizona Cardinals team that is very, very banged up at the moment.
As far as injuries are concerned, San Francisco is also dealing with a few of their own. DT Arik Armstead was once again ruled out for tonight’s game with a foot injury that has kept him sidelined since early October, while DE Samson Ebukam is listed as questionable after being limited in practice for most of the week. In any case, look for San Francisco’s defensive dominance to continue tonight as they face a much-less intimidating opponent in the Colt McCoy-led Cardinals. The neutral field aspect shouldn’t be too much of an issue, as the 49ers are a stellar 22-11 overall away from home since Jimmy Garappolo became the team’s full-time starter in 2019.
Arizona Cardinals +9.5
Over on the opposing sidelines at Estadio Azteca tonight will be none other than Kliff Kingsbury’s Arizona Cardinals (4-6, 5-5 ATS), who despite entering tonight’s game facing a myriad of injuries are still very much alive in the NFC playoff picture.
Arizona remains active in its NFC postseason pursuit thanks to the team’s massive 27-17 road win over the Los Angeles Rams last weekend, which happened to come with backup QB Colt McCoy under center. The 12-year gunslinger showed no signs of rust in Arizona’s victory over LA, completing 26 of his 37 pass attempts for 238 yards, one touchdown, and most importantly zero turnovers. Now that starting QB Kyler Murray has officially been ruled out with a hamstring injury for the second consecutive week, Arizona will once again hand the ball over to its veteran backup.
Arizona did designate WR Hollywood Brown to return from IR earlier this week, but ultimately decided to hold off another week as the wideout recovers from a foot injury sustained in Week 6. WR DeAndre Hopkins was also listed as questionable on the team’s injury report with a hamstring issue, however he is now expected to suit up and play tonight as McCoy’s top option. Aside from TE Zach Ertz, who went down in last week’s win over the Rams, it’ll be full systems go for Colt McCoy’s offense.
This could be a sneaky spot to back McCoy and company, as he did lead the 7-1 Cardinals to a road win over San Francisco as a 5.5-point underdog last season, 31-17. McCoy completed 22 of his 26 pass attempts against the 49ers for 249 yards and one touchdown. James Conner torched San Francisco on the ground for 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while hauling in five passes for 77 receiving yards and a third score.
