Capital One Orange Bowl game info + preview

  • Start Time: 8:00pm ET
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida
  • Participants: No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (10-2) vs No. 7 Clemson Tigers (11-2)

No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers +4.5 at FanDuel Sportsbook

The No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (10-2, 9-3 ATS) will look to cap off an all-around successful season in HC Josh Heupel’s second season leading the program with a big-time win in the Orange Bowl over No. 7 Clemson.

After opening up the 2022 season unranked, the Vols quickly jumped into the AP Poll’s Top 10 teams after defeating the No. 25 LSU Tigers in Death Valley and beginning the season 5-0. Tennessee opened up the following week at No. 6 in the nation and promptly upset the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide in Knoxville to pull off one of the university’s biggest and best wins in recent memory. After two more wins propelled the Volunteers to No. 1 in the AP Poll, they were forced with taking on the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs on the road and were handled rather easily, 27-13, to all but end their dream season.

Tennessee will now attempt to finish strong for Heupel and achieve the program’s highest win total since 2001 when they finished 11-2 under Philip Fulmer. As far as injuries and opt-outs are concerned ahead of the Orange Bowl, Tennessee will be without a few key pieces on both sides of the ball. In addition to offensive coordinator Alex Golesh leaving for the head coaching job at South Florida, superstar WR Jalin Hyatt and fifth-year senior LB Jeremy Banks will both sit this one out in preparation for the 2023 NFL Draft.

No. 7 Clemson Tigers -4.5 with FanDuel

While most programs would consider an 11-2 season capped off by a conference championship victory somewhat of a ‘dream season,’ Dabo Swinney and company likely feel the exact opposite about their performance in 2022.

The No. 7 Clemson Tigers (11-2, 7-6 ATS) undoubtably had championship aspirations heading into this season after failing to make the College Football Playoff in 2021. Things did not go exactly as planned, as the Tigers dropped from an initial No. 4 ranking all the way down to No. 10 in early November after a blowout loss on the road against the unranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. That loss effectively ended any chance of Swinney’s bunch qualifying for the CFP for the seventh time in eight seasons, but the Tigers still managed to finish strong with an ACC Championship victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels, 39-10.

In terms of opt-outs and injuries, the main story revolving around the Tigers’ program as of late has been the transfer of QB DJ Uiagalelei, who recently left for Oregon State after three underwhelming seasons full of ups and downs at Clemson. In addition to losing Uiagalelei to the Beavers and third-string RB Kobe Pace to Virginia, DE Myles Murphy and LB Trenton Simpson have opted out of this one.
