Although this game features two of the better offenses in all of college football, each program stumbled to the finish line down the stretch. North Carolina lost three straight, including a decisive loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. Oregon lost two of their last three games, with their lone win coming against the Pac-12 champion Utah Utes.
No. 15 Oregon Ducks -13.5 at FanDuel
Oregon comes into this one 14th in the FBS in scoring, averaging 36.9 points per game. The Ducks will be led by Auburn transfer Bo Nix, who has had a breakout year. Nix is 16th in the nation with 3,389 passing yards and an impressive 27 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions. Nix is one of the countryβs best dual threats, with 14 touchdowns on the ground.
The Ducks have a dynamic offense that can beat you on the ground and through the air. The Ducks average 508 yards per game, which is 3rd in all of FBS.
Despite their prolific offense, the Ducks come into this one having lost two of their last three, where they relinquished 37 and 38 points in those losses, respectively.
During the year, the Ducks picked up two top-10 wins over UCLA and Utah. Their three losses came against formidable opponents: No. 1 Georgia, Washington, and rival Oregon State.
As weβve seen so far this bowl season, monitoring the transfer portal and NFL Draft opt-outs is crucial for wagering. Oregon currently has 15 scholarship players in the transfer portal. In addition, potential first-round pick Christian Gonzalez and DJ Johnson have opted out of the Holiday Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft.
North Carolina Tar Heels +13.5 with FanDuel Sportsbook
The Tar Heels will be led by QB Drake Maye, a potential top pick for the 2024 NFL Draft. Maye has been remarkable in his first year starting in Chapel Hill. Maye is third in the country with 4,115 yards with 35 touchdown passes to 7 interceptions. Maye found himself as a legitimate candidate for the Heisman trophy heading into the final month of the season, but with three consecutive losses to end the year, two of which came against Georgia Tech and NC State as favorites, Mayeβs Heisman hopes drastically dwindled.Β
With Maye, the Tar Heels average 35 points per game. But itβll be tough for them to put up that many points in this one without star receiver Josh Downs, who is electing to opt out for the 2023 NFL Draft. Downs was the Tar Heelsβ leading receiver with 94 catches, 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns. In addition, the teamβs top cornerback, Tony Grimes, will not play after entering the transfer portal. Grimes is a former five-star recruit who has been a standout on Chapel Hill for the last three years.
Without Grimes, it could be a long day for the North Carolina pass defense against this high-octane Oregon aerial attack.
