No. 16 UCLA Bruins +1.5 (-105) at FanDuel Sportsbook
Mick Cronin’s No. 16 UCLA Bruins (8-2, 5-5 ATS) enter tonight’s game undefeated in the month of December while riding a five-game winning streak that dates back to November 23. The Bruins will now attempt to keep the good times rolling in one of college basketball’s toughest places to play as they hit the road and head into College Park, Maryland.
Following back-to-back losses at the Main Event in Las Vegas to No. 19 Illinois and No. 5 Baylor, the Bruins made quick work out of a lineup of lowly foes that included Pepperdine, Bellarmine, and Denver. UCLA also jumped out to 2-0 start in conference play during its ongoing hot-streak, as the Bruins managed to take down the Stanford Cardinal on the road and the Oregon Ducks at home. But unfortunately for Mick Cronin’s bunch, UCLA has yet to enter a true road environment quite like the one they will experience when they take the floor against the No. 20 Terrapins tonight on FS1.
That’s right, defeating the now 3-6 Stanford Cardinal on the road isn’t going to cut it. Aside from that matchup, UCLA has played all of its games at home or on a neutral court thus far, with both of its losses occurring outside of Pauley Pavilion. Playing on the road is always a daunting task in college basketball, but it can be even more grueling when you’re asked to travel more than 2,600 miles across the country and into a different timezone. This future Big Ten matchup should give the Bruins a bit of a preview of what they will be walking into once conference realignment is complete.
No. 20 Maryland Terrapins -1.5 (-115) with FanDuel
Recently-hired Maryland HC Kevin Willard is off to the races in his first season in College Park. Willard’s No. 20-ranked Terrapins (8-2, 8-2 ATS) began the 2022 campaign with a perfect 8-0 start and even climbed as high as No. 13 in the AP Poll after beginning the season and spending most of November unranked.
After racking up a series of impressive wins over St. Louis, Miami U, and No. 16 Illinois to get to 8-0, the Terrapins ran into a bit of a roadblock last week as they were dropped by the unranked Wisconsin Badgers in Madison and the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers at the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational in Brooklyn, New York. Playing host to the No. 16 Bruins tonight presents an incredibly favorable bounce-back opportunity for the Terps.
If Willard and company want to take down his former colleague Cronin and UCLA tonight, they will once again need to rely on the senior guard duo of Jahmir Young and Hakim Hart. Both Young and Hart combined for 9 three-pointers against Illinois in Maryland’s 71-66 win at home on December 2, while the rest of the Terrapins failed to score from beyond the arc (0-8). In Maryland’s most recent loss to Tennessee, Young and Hart shot a combined 2-13 from deep, but were once again the only Terps to record a three-point field goal. Expect some positive regression from Maryland’s shooters as they return home in what should be an incredibly live and raucous crowd at College Park.
