Thursday Night Football betting preview
This season’s first Amazon Prime Thursday Night broadcast features two of the league’s hottest teams in the Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) and Kansas City Chiefs (1-0). Following impressive showings in Week 1, these two high-flying offenses will square off at Arrowhead Stadium and battle for sole possession of first place in the AFC West. Los Angeles took down the Chiefs in last year’s Week 3 meeting in Kansas City, 30-24, before falling in an overtime thriller in Week 15 at home, 34-28. After two exciting bouts one season ago, it’s now time to settle the score on Thursday Night Football. Let’s get into the matchup.
Los Angeles Chargers +4.5 (-115) with FanDuel Sportsbook
Brandon Staley’s bunch will march into Kansas City following a wire-to-wire win and cover in Week 1 at home against the Las Vegas Raiders, 24-19. QB Justin Herbert completed 26-of-34 passing attempts for 279 yards and three touchdowns in his season debut, but will be without his leading receiver Keenan Allen on Thursday night after the superstar wideout suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1. Allen’s absence should pave the way for a breakout game from WR Mike Williams, who was held to just 10 yards on two catches against the Raiders. Williams exploded in his most recent game at Arrowhead Stadium, posting 7 catches for 122 receiving yards and two touchdowns in Week 3 of last season.
On the defensive side of the ball, Los Angeles will look to replicate last week’s effort in which they surrendered just 19 points and 320 total yards to the Raiders, both of which rank top 12 in the NFL. Superstar CB J.C. Jackson has a chance to make his Chargers debut after missing Week 1 as he continues to recover from ankle surgery, however his status will likely come down to a game-time decision.
Kansas City Chiefs -4.5 (-105) on FanDuel
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs did not miss a beat in their first NFL game since the Tyreek Hill trade, as the team went up 14-0 early on and did not look back en route to a 44-21 blowout victory over the Arizona Cardinals. It was business as usual for TE Travis Kelce (8 catches, 121 yards, 1 TD), while newcomers Marquez Valdes-Scantling (4 catches, 44 yards) and JuJu Smith-Schuster (6 catches, 79 yards) picked up the load in place of the departed Hill. On the ground, rookie RB Isiah Pacheco led the team in rushing attempts (12 carries, 62 yards) and even found the end zone in his NFL debut.
Defensively, Kansas City looked as good as they ever have despite the loss of star safety Tyrann Mathieu over the offseason. The Chiefs held Arizona to just seven points until the fourth quarter and finished the game with just 103 total rushing yards allowed. This week, however, they’ll be tasked with slowing down a much more dynamic offense that may have their number – Los Angeles has posted 30+ points and 350+ total yards in each of their previous three meetings with Kansas City.
Chiefs safety Justin Reid was called upon to do some kicking in the win over Arizona, as Harrison Butker suffered an ankle injury in the first half of the game. Butker did return and drill a 54-yard field goal right before halftime, but has been ruled out for Thursday night’s showdown against LA. Filling in for Butker will be former Jets kicker Matt Ammendola, who was signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad earlier this week and is expected to be elevated to the active roster ahead of kickoff.
