Monday Night Football features the NFC South’s first-place team against its last-place team, but only one win separates them, explaining the relatively low spread. Itβs been that kind of year for a lowly NFC South that has struggled to rattle off many wins.
The Bucs will try to go for the season sweep of the Saints tonight for the first time since Tom Brady became the starter for Tampa. Before betting on this one, hereβs what you need to know.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers -3.5 at FanDuel Sportsbook
Although there still seems to be some belief that the Buccaneers can turn this ship around and look like the Bucs of old, that just hasnβt been the case. The offense is 27th in points per game, and things will be even tougher against a Saints defense that has given them fits in the past.
Although Leonard Fournette is trending towards playing in this one, star right tackle Tristan Wirfs will be out for the count. The Bucs are coming off one of their more frustrating losses in an uneven year. Despite coming off the bye week, the Browns were able to eek by the Bucs in Jacoby Brissettβs final start before handing over the reigns to Deshaun Watson.
The Bucs have the fifth-best passing offense regarding yardage but are dead last in rushing offense. This has been glaring in the red zone, where the Bucs rank 25th in converting red zone opportunities into touchdowns.
Historically, Brady has struggled against the Saints in a Bucs uniform. If he wants to escape Raymond James with a victory, his offense must be more efficient in the red zone.Β
New Orleans Saints +3.5 with FanDuel
If the Saints plan to stay in the hunt, tonight serves as a must-win for first-year head coach Dennis Allen and co.
The Saints will be without three key players: tight end Juwan Johnson, defensive end Payton Turner, and safety P.J. Williams are all unavailable for tonightβs divisional matchup. The one to keep your eye out for: Marshon Lattimore is a game-time decision with an ailing ab injury.
The Saints had their chances to pull off an upset against the San Francisco 49ers last week, but losing the turnover battle two to zero was a big reason why they were held scoreless. Andy Dalton will assume the start under center once again for New Orleans, but he hasnβt inspired much confidence in his last few starts.
With a lackluster run game, points may be hard to come by once again for New Orleans. If they want to split the season series, the defense must be lights out again.
