Week 0 college football betting preview
It’s not considered a full college football slate, but after months without meaningful football – “Week 0” feels pretty good. Let’s preview the biggest games – all posted odds are from FanDuel Sportsbook.
Nebraska vs. Northwestern – 12:30 pm
Week 0 starts with a bang in Dublin, Ireland, between Nebraska and Northwestern. These two Big Ten programs have seen brighter days as each only managed to tally three wins in 2021.
But there was a stark difference between how each program got there. Despite posting a 3-9 record, Nebraska finished with a peculiar +63 point differential. On the flip side, Northwestern had a -149 point differential as they averaged a horrendous 13 points per game in Big Ten play.
Nebraska is heading into this season with a new quarterback under center. Casey Thompson, a Texas transfer, will lead the Cornhuskers and figures to be a solid upgrade over his predecessor. For Northwestern, head coach Pat Fitzgerald has not yet disclosed who the starter will be for the Wildcats. Northwestern has held a quarterback competition between Ryan Hilinski, who started against Nebraska last year, and sophomore Brendan Sullivan.Β
NEB -11.5
TOTAL O/U 50.5
UConn @ Utah St. – 4:00 pm
The UConn Huskies come into Logan, Utah, entering a new era of football under Jim Mora Jr. Mora hasnβt been on the sidelines since 2017, when he was at UCLA.
UConn was abysmal last year, finishing with only one win, which came against FCS opponent Yale by a meager six points. Even with marginal gains on both sides of the football, UConn should expect to see more struggles under Moraβs tutelage in year one.
Utah St. is coming off an impressive 11-win campaign capped off with a win over Oregon State in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl.
Utah St. should continue to light up the scoreboard as four starters are back on the offensive line, as well as standout quarterback Logan Bonner.
USU -26.5
TOTAL O/U 58.5
Wyoming @ Illinois – 4:00 pm
Neither Wyoming nor Illinois will announce a starting quarterback before they duel it out on Saturday afternoon. For the Fighting Illini, either Artur Sitkowski or Syracuse transfer Tommy DeVito will be the teamβs signal caller, while the Cowboys will go with one of their new transfers, Andrew Peasley or Evan Svoboda.
Despite whoever is under center, we know what these teams are about: playing good defense and running the football. Bret Bielema is the head coach of Illinois, who led the Illini to a 5-7 campaign in his first year last season.
For Wyoming, head coach Craig Bohl is entering his 9th season. Bohl is coming off his 4th career bowl game appearance, where the Cowboys won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl over Kent St. 52-38.
Donβt expect the point total to be nearly as high in this one, with the line set at a measly 43.5 points.
ILL -12.5
TOTAL O/U 43.5
Charlotte @ FAU – 7:00 pm
Conference USA will headline two of Week 0βs intriguing matchups. First up: the 49ers of Charlotte, who were in contention for a bowl berth in 2021, will travel to Boca Raton to take on the Owls of Florida Atlantic.
Chris Reynolds will return as the 49ers’ quarterback for this upcoming season. Charlotte lost five of their last six down the stretch, but their offense should not be slept on. In 2021, Reynolds threw 26 touchdowns to only nine interceptions as heβs one of eight offensive starters back for the 9ers.
The point total is high for a reason, as the FAU offense is also led by a top-tier quarterback in Miami transfer, NβKosi Perry. FAU topped Charlotte in last yearβs meeting by 29 points but expect this one to be much closer with two high-octane offenses.
Just like Charlotte, FAU crumbled down the stretch as they lost their last four to miss out on a bowl game. Both teams will look to start off their season strong in this one. FanDuel Sportsbook has options for all sorts of bets on the game.
FAU -7.5
TOTAL O/U 60.5
North Texas @ UTEP – 9:00 pm
In the second C-USA showdown, the Mean Green of North Texas will take on the Miners from El-Paso, Texas. These two programs have seen plenty of success recently.Β
Head coach Seth Littrell has led the Mean Green to bowl games in five of his last six seasons, while Dana Dimel is coming off his first bowl appearance since taking over the Minersβ head job in 2018.
UNT returns eight starters from their offense, leading one of the nation’s most potent rushing attacks. The defense is expected to be a concern as the Murphy brothers, Gabriel and Grayson; both transferred to UCLA.
UTEP is coming off their first bowl game since 2014. UTEP is a pesky team that plays solid defense coupled with solid offensive production. They return 15 of 22 total starters and should continue to trend up in C-USA. The FanDuel Sportsbook college football betting sheet currently have it as follows:
UNT -1.5
TOTAL O/U 54.5
Vanderbilt @ Hawaii – 10:30 pm
One of college footballβs more underrated traditions will be taking place in Week 0: Hawaii hosting a game on national television.Β And expect some fireworks as former record-setting quarterback Timmy Chang will try to lead the Rainbow Warriors program back to prominence.
They will be taking on the Commodores from Vanderbilt University. Clark Lea is entering his second year, where he went 2-10 in his inaugural season, finishing without a win in the SEC.
Although Vandy has had its fair share of struggles, Hawaii is entering one of the more bleak situations to start a season in recent memory. Former Hawaii head coach Todd Graham faced allegations of mistreating players, which led to his resignation in January. As a result, Hawaii lost 19 players to the transfer portal.
And well, whenever there are late-night games on the island, itβs best to prepare for the unexpected. It may not be the best football, but it should be entertaining.
VAN -8.5
TOTAL O/U 53.5
