2022 Field of Dreams Game: Betting on Cubs vs Reds

The second installment of Major League Baseball’s Field of Dreams Game will feature none other than the Chicago Cubs taking on the Cincinnati Reds. While both teams look to avoid a last place finish in the National League Central Division the rest of the way, stakes will certainly be higher than ever when they enter through the cornfield at the Field of Dreams on Thursday night. Let’s break down both clubs starting with the Cubs, who will serve as the away team and open as the favorite to win the game at -116 over at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Chicago Cubs (-116)

After failing to unload some of their top talent with expiring contracts by the August 2 trade deadline, the Chicago Cubs will enter this highly-anticipated matchup backed by big bats in Willson Contreras, Ian Happ, and the newly-acquired Franmil Reyes. Despite sitting at 45-65 overall on the season, manager David Ross gets his team to play hard every night and that should not change when they take one of baseball’s biggest and brightest stages.

Ross is expected to hand the ball over to veteran southpaw Drew Smyly at the Field of Dreams, and for good reason. In five career starts against the Reds, Smyly owns a stellar 4-0 record, 3.41 ERA, and 1.103 WHIP across 29 innings pitched. And although the reliable left-hander has yet to throw a pitch at Dyersville, Smyly has seen a bit more success when pitching away from home in his career. In 490.2 innings on the road, Smyly has posted a 4.11 ERA and a winning record of 32-23. In 412.1 innings at home throughout his career, Smyly’s ERA rises to 4.23 and his record drops to a mediocre 18-22.

Players to Watch:

  • Ian Happ: 24 HR, 56 RBI, .297/.409/.674 vs Reds all-time
  • Willson Contreras: 14 HR, 35 RBI, .291/.356/.535 vs Reds all-time
  • Christopher Morel: 13 for 31 (.419), 4 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI vs Reds in 2022

Cincinnati Reds (-102)

Cincinnati did a little more work at the trade deadline than the Cubs, officially moving on from RHP Luis Castillo, RHP Tyler Mahle, OF Tyler Naquin, OF Tommy Pham, and INF Brandon Drury in exchange for a haul of prospects. With that being said, the Reds’ roster is a bit thin entering the Field of Dreams Game but will be ready to compete nonetheless. Since getting off to an abysmal 3-22 start to the 2022 season, Cincinnati has played fairly well. The Reds are 41-44 overall since that point and enter this matchup playing some of their best ball of the season.

Rookie LHP Nick Lodolo is slated to take the mound for manager David Bell on Thursday night, having yet to face Chicago throughout his rookie campaign. Unfortunately for Reds fans and bettors alike, Lodolo has struggled mightily when pitching away from home in his short career. The young southpaw owns a 3-1 record to go along with a razor-sharp 2.87 ERA at Great American Ball Park this season but hasn’t been able to match that success on the road: Lodolo is 0-2 with an 8.49 ERA in three road starts at Milwaukee, St. Louis, and San Diego. And while Chicago’s bats may be a bit less intimidating than the teams mentioned above, numbers don’t lie and they are certainly something worth considering when placing any action on this year’s Field of Dreams Game.

Players to Watch:

  • Aristides Aquino: 4 for 9 (.444), 3 HR vs Smyly all-time
  • Donovan Solano: 3 for 8 (.375) vs Smyly all-time
  • Joey Votto: 8 for 24 (.333), 2 HR vs Cubs in 2022, 48 HR all-time (most vs any team)
