No. 17 Illinois Fighting Illini vs. No. 2 Texas Longhorns

  • Tip-off: 7:00pm ET
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
  • Participants: No. 17 Illinois Fighting Illini (6-2) vs. No. 2 Texas Longhorns (6-0)
  • FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: Texas -2.5, O/U 141.5

For our first matchup, we have the #2 ranked team in the country versus the #17 ranked team. Illinois is coming off a loss in their Big Ten opener, but they have a handful of wins in their non-conference slate that will boost their resume for March.

The Longhorns are among the 12 remaining undefeated teams left in Division I. Texas has taken down two top-ten teams in the nation in Gonzaga and Creighton at the Moody Center. This game at Madison Square Garden will be the Longhorns’ first test away from home this season.

But as the saying goes, if there’s one thing that travels well in college basketball, it’s defense. According to KenPom, the Longhorns have the third-most efficient defense in the country, absolutely stifling opponents to date.Β

On the other side, the Illini boast the 12th-most efficient defense and may have arguably the best player in this game, their prized possession from the transfer portal, Terrence Shannon Jr.Β

In Illinois’s biggest win of the season over UCLA, Shannon Jr. chipped in 29 points and is currently averaging 19.8 points per game. If Shannon Jr. can continue to play at a high level, they’ll have a good shot at pulling off the upset against a stingy Texas team.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. No. 15 Duke Blue Devils

  • Tip-off: 9:30pm ET
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York
  • Participants: Iowa Hawkeyes (6-1) vs. No. 15 Duke Blue Devils (8-2)
  • FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: Duke -2.5, O/U 146.5

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffrey will look for his 500th career win at MSG against the mighty Blue Devils of Duke. This one could feature plenty of fireworks as this game features the #17 rated KenPom offense versus the #3 rated KenPom offense.

This game should be an exciting clash of styles. While the Hawkeyes are more guard-oriented, led by breakout star Kris Murray, Duke is built on second-chance opportunities on the offensive glass and has one of the biggest and deepest front courts in the country.

Both of Duke’s losses have come on a neutral court this year, and tonight could mark a third if they aren’t careful. Although Iowa isn’t ranked, they currently rate as the 22nd-ranked team in the first edition of college basketball’s NET rankings.

Don’t be surprised if this one comes down to the final possession.
