Notre Dame vs Ohio State betting preview
The stage is officially set for Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio, as the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes prepare to host the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a battle of perennial championship contenders. Challenging Ryan Day and his Buckeyes will be none other than new Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman, who takes over for Brian Kelly after he spent the last 11 seasons at the program’s helm.
The former Buckeye linebacker will now attempt to lead his Fighting Irish to a massive Week 1 upset, as FanDuel Sportsbook currently has Notre Dame listed as a 17.5-point underdog. Bettors can find a slew of additional game props, player props, and other ways to bet on Notre Dame vs Ohio State over at FanDuel, along with odds for every other game taking place during Week 1! Indiana-based bettors can start playing today, while residents of Ohio will unfortunately need to wait until January 1, 2023 to place any legal action in their state. If you live near the Ohio border though, chances are you are close to a state with legal betting. Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia all have it. Drive over and place your bets.
Let’s get into the matchup:
Notre Dame Fighting Irish: +17.5 on FanDuel Sportsbook
Despite finishing the 2021 regular season at 11-1 overall, the Fighting Irish enter the new campaign with quite a few concerns on their roster, specifically on the offensive side of the football. For starters, the Irish lost their leading passer in Jack Coan, leading rusher in Kyren Williams, and leading receiver in Kevin Austin – all to the pros. Notre Dame also lost senior WR Avery Davis to a torn ACL in August, further thinning the team’s depth and level of experience. Junior TE Michael Mayer is back for the Irish and should command his fair share of attention, however it might be a bit more challenging for the All-American to create space without as many weapons surrounding him.
With all of that being said, Freeman’s offense will be operated by sophomore quarterback Tyler Buchner on Saturday night, as the second-year gunslinger is set to make his first career start under center. Buchner did appear in 10 games for the Irish last season but none involved any meaningful snaps. Even so, if the young dual-threat can simply limit his mistakes, slow down the game, and allow Notre Dame’s veteran defense to set the tone, he could find himself in position to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the year in college football.
Ohio State Buckeyes: -17.5 on Fanduel
It’s clearly championship or bust for No. 2 Ohio State after the program finished 11-2 last season and failed to make the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2018. The Buckeyes will be led by none other than Heisman favorite CJ Stroud at quarterback, who will look to pick up where he left off after OSU led the nation in points per game (45.7) and yards per game (561.2) in 2021. Along with Stroud, Ohio State brings back its top rusher in TreVeyon Henderson and leading receiver in Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who should be able to build upon his monster showing at the Rose Bowl (15 catches for 347 yards, 3 TD) and solidify himself as the best wideout in all of college football.
Defense was obviously Ohio State’s achilles heel in 2021, as the team finished 38th in the nation in points allowed per game (22.8) and 34th in passing yards allowed per game (246.2). The Buckeyes were absolutely gashed through the air in most of their regular season games and on the ground in their final two games against Michigan and Utah. As a result, the program brought in Oklahoma State DC Jim Knowles to right the ship and expect a major turnaround from the man who anchored the Cowboys’ stout defense from 2018-2021.
Led by arguably the most explosive offense in the entire country, Ohio State should have no problem taking care of Notre Dame on Saturday night at the Horseshoe. Despite their struggles on the defensive end, OSU will be extremely tough to stop and once that offense starts clicking, Marcus Freeman and company could be in for a very long night.
