After watching some ridiculous College Football Playoff semifinals this past New Year’s Eve, we come back today with plenty more bowl games, with Penn State vs. Utah slated as the most exciting one of the bunch.

After falling just short last season in their first-ever Rose Bowl appearance in one of the best thrillers in all of the 2021-2022 college football season, Utah makes a trip back to Pasadena to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. This will be Penn State’s first trip back to the Rose Bowl since 2016 when Sam Darnold played one of the best games you’ll ever see from a college quarterback in an exhilarating 52-49 win for USC.

Just like those two games, this one has all the makings of a classic between two hungry and evenly-matched teams. You can join the action when you register for a new account on FanDuel Sportsbook! Rose Bowl Game Presented by Prudential game info

  • Date: Monday, January 2, 2023
  • Time: 5:00 pm ET
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Location: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California
  • Participants: No. 11 Penn State Nittany Lions (10-2) vs. No. 8 Utah Utes (10-3)
  • FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: Penn State -1.5, O/U 53.5

Penn State Nittany Lions -1.5 at FanDuel

The No. 11-ranked Nittany Lions will face their third Top 10 opponent of the season as they prepare to take on the Utes of Utah.

The Nittany Lions can do their program some good with a win over a loaded Utah squad – Penn State is expected to bring back plenty of talent with true freshman Drew Allar to take over the reigns at quarterback. But it’ll be tougher without potential first-round, lockdown cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

However, Porter is the only known opt-out for the Nittany Lions. Olu Fashanu shocked the world when he announced he’d skip the 2023 NFL Draft to return for another season in Happy Valley. Fashanu was thought to be a potential Top 10 pick, but with him returning, Penn State has the potential to be one of the nation’s best teams next season.

Penn State will be led by its dynamic duo of true freshman running backs in Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton, who each rushed for over 800 yards in the regular season. This will be quarterback Sean Clifford’s final game as a collegiate starter – Clifford has started for the past four seasons at Penn State, generating 84 passing touchdowns and over 10,000 passing yards in his career.

Utah Utes +1.5 with FanDuel Sportsbook

Utah comes into this one as a short underdog in what should be a fun one. It would be tough to find another coach in America who’s done as much to single-handedly turn around a program as much as head coach Kyle Whittingham has in his 17 years in Salt Lake City. Before Whittingham arrived, Utah was a middling program in the Mountain West. But behind their head coach’s leadership, Utah has become a powerhouse in a loaded Pac-12.

Since his arrival, Whittingham is an impressive 9-4 in bowl games, but has fallen in his last three. Just like Penn State, Utah will be without their star cornerback Clark Phillips III. They will also be without running back Tavion Thompson and tight end Dalton Kincaid. The Utes have had to function most of this season without star tight end Brant Kuithe as well.

For an offense that is built around its two star tight ends, it may be tough for quarterback Cam Rising to overcome the harsh circumstances in this one.
