Best Online Sports Betting Apps in the U.S.: Quick Ranking And Reviews

Not all brands are created equal, however. There are some major differences between mobile apps in terms of reliability, user experience, responsiveness, depth of the sportsbook menu, pricing, customer service, whether it has withdrawal and deposit methods such as PayPal, and other features. (We have some additional materials if you’re interested in learning about sportsbook bonuses or “risk-free betting.”)

The legal status of online betting in the U.S. has been rapidly evolving on a state-by-state basis ever since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports wagering, PASPA, in May 2018.

There are multiple licensed mobile operators in almost two dozen states, including Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, among others.

However, the number of legal sportsbook apps varies widely from state to state, depending on how the state legislature and regulators decided to shape their laws and the rules.

While most states feature an open market with multiple books, others are limited to one, such as in New Hampshire, where only DraftKings operates, for now at least.

Nevertheless, regardless of the states they are active in, the apps are quite different and many of them are worth your time and action. Competition is good for us, the sports betting consumer, so let them push each other to innovate and improve.

In the next section, we’ll go through each of our picks for the best sports betting apps individually, the same as we did for our rundown of the best scores and odds apps to download.

1. FanDuel Sportsbook

As one of the biggest daily fantasy sports providers in the U.S., FanDuel Sportsbook has plenty of experience when it comes to catering to players. The operator also has one of the biggest names in iGaming behind it, ever since it was acquired by Paddy Power Betfair in 2018.

The operator is currently active in 18 states: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and most recently Wyoming. Since their foray into real money sports betting requires a totally different platform, FanDuel offers separate apps for its sportsbook and DFS contests.

The apps are available for both iOS and Android devices and offer a top-notch user experience. This is reflected in the app reviews, as the iOS app boasts a superior score. Users can access the full suite of the operator’s services through the app.

Overall FanDuel offers a clean, fast, easily navigable, intuitive app with great pricing and a wide range of betting options. It was the first U.S. sportsbook to offer the very popular “Same Game Parlay” and the copycats simply have not matched it in function. Alongside the second and third options on this list, it is the first to offer player props each week for the NFL and other contests.

FanDuel also has the fastest cashouts we’ve seen. Preferences from one guy to the next vary, but at the present time, it’s widely considered one of the best out there, if not the best. At least it tops our list.

2. DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKings logo Together with FanDuel, DraftKings Sportsbook stands as one of the leading providers of daily fantasy sports. The operator started offering online sports betting services in New Jersey only three months after PASPA was struck down, in fact it became the first legal mobile betting app outside of Nevada.

DraftKings currently offers mobile services in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming. DraftKings offers apps for both iOS and Android platforms. The apps are very well optimized and easy to navigate. It’s responsive and pretty fast. It has only improved since shifting in 2021 from Kambi for its back-end software and risk-management to an in-house system powered by SBTech. The pricing has improved slightly and the breadth of betting markets has only increased.

Also great: DK is quick to post player and game props, alternative lines and spreads. The interface, in some sections, is a bit cluttered.  Its ‘Same Game Parlay’ feature is simply not as good as FanDuel’s and the pricing is more opaque. One other smallish gripe: the geolocation can be a bit finicky and sometimes requires a reboot, at least in certain jurisdictions.

Users have access to a very wide range of sports from both U.S. and international markets. You’ll also find lots of creative promotions and free bets at DraftKings. The iOS app is one of the highest-rated sportsbook apps on the market.

3. Caesars Sportsbook

Caesars Sportsbook logoCaesars is one of the most well-known brands in the gambling and entertainment world, so it is no surprise that following Caesars Entertainment’s acquisition of William Hill U.S., Caesars Sportsbook has taken over as the company’s sportsbook brand name (except in Nevada). Caesars kicked off this audible with a major marketing campaign that features, among other figures, actor/comedian J.B. Smoove and actress Halle Berry.

Anyhow, it’s become available in most legal sports betting states, including Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Overall, the Caesars Sportsbook mobile experience ticks all the right boxes, especially if you prefer a non-cluttered, easy-to-read display. It’s pretty smooth and simple to deposit and withdraw funds (methods include PayPal), get in touch with support via live chat, and more within the app interface. A couple tangential points: Caesars seeks to cater to the recreational better, and is rumored to limit or shut out long-term or big winning bettors. That said, nobody does a brick-and-mortar sportsbook better.

Caesars is also among the earliest to post player and game props, and since moving from William Hill to Caesars, has become much more generous (or aggressive) in its promotional offerings, free bets, and initial welcome bonus package, which have included deposit matches and a large risk-free bet. If you like getting casino rewards as part of the package (and lots of casino-related emails), well, this is the book for you, too.

4. BetMGM Sportsbook

betmgm logo BetMGM has done a pretty good job with its mobile platform since partnering with GVC in a joint venture called “Roar Digital.” The brand offers a big variety of betting types including points spreads, moneyline bets, prop bets, futures, parlay bets and in-play betting.

The sign-up bonus is great, we constantly get “Free Bet” offers through its “Money Monday” club (depending on your state) and other recurring promotions. BetMGM is live in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington D.C, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

You’ll find almost as many props here as the other top sportsbooks listed above. All the tabs you’ll need to navigate the app are located at the bottom of the screen, front and center at all times — Home, A-Z Menu, Betslip, My Bets, and Promotions. But our biggest gripe remains that BetMGM is sometimes sluggish to load and prone to freezing. Some of the navigation is substandard, too. Over the past year, BetMGM has only grown in popularity, because it’s still a very good book.

5. WynnBET Sportsbook

WynnBET LogoWynn Resorts might be best known for their luxurious properties in Las Vegas and all around the world, but their mobile sports betting app is quickly becoming the center of attention. A rather late arrival to the legal sports betting party, WynnBET first debuted in New Jersey back in July 2020. Colorado followed shortly after in November 2020, and five more states would join them in 2021.

As of February 2023, WynnBET is now live in nine states: Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, and Virginia. The company has also expressed interest in coming to a number of other states. When all is said and done, expect WynnBET to pop up in the majority of legalized states.

The WynnBET mobile app is available to download on both iOS and Android platforms. Unlike other sportsbooks that allow users to switch their state within one general app, WynnBET provides individual apps for each state that they operate in. If you are playing in New Jersey, download the WynnBET New Jersey app. Each state-specific app is essentially the same exact offering, save for minor differences based on that state. For example, New Jersey college teams are not listed on the WynnBET NJ app due to state regulations. They would, however, be listed on the WynnBET Virginia app, or any other WynnBET app outside of NJ.

In terms of performance, the app runs extremely well. It rarely lags or glitches and the overall aesthetic of the app is just as regal as a brick-and-mortar Wynn Resort property. Their promotions are solid, offering various opportunities to obtain free bets, boosts for your parlays, or reduced juice on select markets during their signature ‘WynnBET Win Hour,’ which is basically WynnBET’s take on Happy Hour.

One of WynnBET’s strongest features is how quickly they post odds for games taking place the following day. For example, college basketball odds for the following day are usually posted around 7pm on most sportsbooks. WynnBET typically posts them around 2-3pm, making them by far the fastest book to release lines. If this continues, there is a clear advantage to playing with WynnBET.

6. BetRivers Sportsbook

BetRivers Sportsbook LogoCurrently available in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut (as the brand PlaySugarHouse), Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, New York, New Jersey (PlaySugarHouse), Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, BetRivers is a product of Rush Street Interactive. BetRivers apps have a good design with intuitive navigation and a polished layout. In fact, it’s lot less cluttered than the desktop version, which wastes a ton of real estate on ads and a silly scroll listing wins by other players.

The app uses Kambi for its back-end software and risk management. This brings lots of betting options and overall fairly competitive pricing. While promotions aren’t as creative or robust as they are with competitors, BetRivers does offer users their iRush Rewards loyalty program, which is more than many others do. Withdrawals, in our experience, are lightning fast. BetRivers’ first deposit bonus is a 100% match and only requires a 1x wagering play-through, which is a huge plus over their competition. It’s a solid sports betting experience overall, just not terribly different than what you’ll see with many of its competitors.

7. PointsBet Sportsbook

PointsBet logoFirst launched in 2017 in Australia, PointsBet Sportsbook has quickly become one of the biggest betting operators Down Under. The sportsbook then set its sights on U.S. expansion, and made some pretty rapid gains. At the time of writing, the operator is live in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. It’s also the official sportsbook partner of NBC Sports.

The PointsBet app gives you access to over 15 different sports, covering all of the major professional leagues. It’s (mostly) fast and clean with little clutter and overall is an excellent user experience. Easy access to fast deposits and withdrawals.

PointsBet also has its own risk-management team and software developers, so often the pricing and odds are different than a number of U.S. sportsbooks. The app has a totally unique layout and feel, giving it some nice differentiation. They’re also quick to post player props. On top of that, they offer “PointsBetting” — a very different kind of betting that’s high upside and high risk, and not currently available anywhere else. Read more about it in our full review. Users can also expect plenty of promo and bonus offers, many of them creative, and excellent customer service with 24/7 live chat available.

On the downside, the actual placing of bets has become a bit sluggish in our experience, often spinning the wheel for upwards of 30 seconds even on smallish wagers, even on pre-game bets. Many competitors will process these bets almost instantly. The delay is not a good user experience and one we’d like to see remedied as soon as possible.

8. FOX Bet Sportsbook

fox bet logo FOX Bet is currently operational in Colorado, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The operator is the product of the cooperation between two industry giants – The Stars Group (acquired by Flutter) and the FOX Corporation (FOX Sports).  Note that the starting point for the app is actually BetStars, which was rebranded into the modern FOX product.

FOX Bet offers a top of the line mobile experience. In addition to its intuitive design, access to a variety of sports markets and live betting menus are readily available. Pricing is about average, there’s frequent promos and odds boosts, some pretty crazy prop bets, and not that aesthetics matter too much, but it’s a good-looking betting vehicle. It’s always worth checking out FOX Bet for future market pricing, as we’ve often found much better numbers and greater value with them.

On the downside, customer service is between below-average and poor and the in-game pricing is often better elsewhere. They do not have a live chat feature, and responses to form requests weren’t particularly helpful.

9. Betway Sportsbook

Betway Logo Originally founded in 2006, this Malta-based international bookmaker has a long history of accepting action all over the world. The brand first dipped its toe into U.S waters when it launched in Colorado and Indiana simultaneously on June 30, 2021.

Following their initial launches in Colorado and Indiana, Betway successfully rolled out five more state launches in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Arizona, and Virginia, bringing their current total to seven active states. With U.S expansion clearly on this brand’s mind, it is expected that they will branch out to a number of other states in the near future.

Betway’s mobile app is available to download for free on both iOS and Android platforms. The app is clean, simple, and easy to use. There aren’t a ton of pop-up menus or tabs jumping out at you every which way, which is a nice change of pace compared to most other sports betting apps.

Betway offers a strong selection of sports markets, covering just about every major league or event that a gambler could desire and more, including obscure markets like lacrosse and darts. Their live-betting menu is front and center on the homepage and their odds are on par with the industry standard.

Between the Daily Betway Boost, consistent parlay boost promotions, and a strong new-user offering, Betway is without a doubt worth checking out. As a proud partner of multiple NBA teams including the Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks, and Miami Heat, this brand is rising in the ranks rather quickly.

10. SI Sportsbook

SI Sportsbook logo If you consider yourself a sports fan, then there’s a good chance you’ve come across an issue of Sports Illustrated at some point in your life. Following a deal with worldwide gaming company 888, the iconic magazine brand is officially branching out into the bookmaking game.

SI Sportsbook first made its highly-anticipated debut in the state of Colorado in 2021 and has since joined just one other state, launching in Virginia on May 26, 2022. Despite its slow rollout, the company has announced plans to eventually bring their product to Indiana, Iowa, and New Jersey as well. The brand even has an online skin waiting for them in New Jersey after new business partner 888 pulled their 888sport platform to make room for SI Sportsbook’s arrival.

Although the app is only available in Colorado and Virginia at the moment, it is a finished product and comes packed with promotions and unique features. The app is available to download for free on both iOS and Android platforms and each individual state that SI Sportsbook launches in will use the same general app. There is a ‘State Selector’ switch within the main menu that can be used to set your app to the correct state.

As far as the app’s content goes, there are plenty of interesting features that can only be found at SI Sportsbook. Their free-to-play ‘Perfect 10’ contest gives users a ton of opportunities to acquire free bets each week, they provide various ‘SI Specials’ including profit boosts and special bets, and their very own ‘BetFeed’ shows users what everyone else on the app is currently putting their money down on. With an app as innovative as it is creative, there is no doubt that this prominent media brand will soon become a force in the sports betting industry.

11. Barstool Sportsbook

Barstool LogoBarstool Sportsbook has acted as an agent of chaos. What started as a small, eccentric sports blog has morphed into one of the biggest sports media entities in the world. They have since expanded into sports betting in the United States.

For the most part, this can be attributed to its founder, Dave Portnoy, aka El Presidente. Ever since Barstool Sports’ emergence, Portnoy has established himself as one of the biggest names in the media. And because of that success, as of August 18, Penn National Gaming exercised its option to acquire 100% of Barstool Sports. The transaction is expected to be completed in 2023 – the deal is valued at $450 million.

As it currently stands, Barstool Sportsbook is available for mobile sports wagering in 12 states and iGaming in another four. Because of its media footprint, Barstool Sportsbook has enjoyed a fair amount of success in the sports betting world without any signs of slowing down.

In addition to their success, Barstool Sportsbook boasts one of the best welcome offers in the business. It acts as a risk-free bet, but the kicker: they pay out any reimbursement in bonus cash. Bonus cash works the same as cash with a winning wager – you will be paid out in winnings and stake, whereas in wagering with free bets, you will only see the winnings.

If you haven’t joined and are in an active state, make sure you aren’t missing out on one of the best sportsbook apps in Barstool.

12. Betfred Sportsbook

This UK-born bookmaking brand may sound unfamiliar to U.S bettors, but all of that is about to change. Betfred, a company created by Greater Manchester’s Fred Done in the 1960’s, finally reached United States soil when it launched in Colorado in September 2020.

Since its initial launch, Betfred has gone live in a number of states, including Arizona, Colorado, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The company also recently opened The Betfred Sportsbook inside The Draft Room at the Paragon Casino Resort in Louisiana and are expected to eventually offer mobile betting in the state as well. Furthermore, Betfred is also coming to Nevada. Once completed, players in Sin City can stop by The Betfred Sportsbook at the Mohegan Sun Casino at Virgin Hotel Las Vegas and place some action.

As far as their mobile offering goes, Betfred has rolled out a product that is on par with the rest of the major players in the United States. All of their most important features are front and center at the top of the home screen, including Betfred Support, Live Betting, Betfred Boosts, and Promotions. One of their best features is the ‘Trending’ tab, which sorts all games by the time they are going to start. Thanks to this, never miss another last minute bet while scrambling to find the line. Loading times could be a drop quicker, but other than that it’s an all-around quality user experience. As Betfred expands into more states across the country, bettors will surely start taking notice.

Mobile Sportsbooks Basics

As smartphones have crept up into every avenue of our daily lives, it’s not surprising that many users prefer the convenience of betting on mobile devices (and reading the news on them too, and taking photos, and sleeping with them on a pillow… we digress). So let’s see what exactly mobile sportsbooks are, and what customers can expect while using them.

What is a mobile sportsbook app?

A mobile sportsbook app is an app provided by online sports betting operators to allow for betting on-the-go. The operators usually make their apps available for iOS and Android, the two dominant mobile operating systems.

If you happen to be looking for a good scores and odds app to download, visit here.

What can a user do with/on a mobile sportsbook app?

Ideally, mobile sportsbook apps give users the full range of features they would normally have if accessing the sportsbook’s desktop client. This means that users can sign up for an account, place bets, make a deposit or withdraw funds and participate in promotional offers. If the operators support live streaming, they will usually also provide it through their apps.

How does a mobile sportsbook app differ from a web-based sportsbook?

A mobile sportsbook app is simply another way of accessing a web-based or online sportsbook. Dedicated mobile apps are released for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets as a more convenient way to access the brand’s services on the go — such as at a bar or at a stadium.

Being that they are developed for mobile devices, mobile sportsbooks can offer some advantages. These include notifying users about the latest results and the status of their bets, keeping them up to date with the latest offers and providing easy access to account management and banking.

Online sportsbook websites are also often optimized for easy access through both desktop and mobile browsers. So, ultimately, the way users choose to access a sportsbook’s services comes down to personal preference. You can use the app at the bar, at home, on the can (let’s be honest) or on the commute home from work.

Bonuses on mobile sports betting apps

To incentivize the download and use of their dedicated mobile apps, it’s common for brands to offer mobile-specific bonuses. These can include free bets, betting insurance, boosted odds, profit boosts, etc.

Users can usually find all available bonuses on the operator’s promotions tab or page (or maybe “rewards”). This means that users will have full access to every promotional offer the sportsbook has if they sign up and access the sportsbook on mobile. Read here for more.

How to download and install mobile sportsbooks

As we have already mentioned, operators usually release sportsbook apps on two major mobile platforms – iOS and Android. Although the actual content of the apps doesn’t differ much between operating systems, the installation procedure is different. This comes down to the different policies Apple and Google have towards online betting.

So, let’s go through the necessary procedure for each of the platforms.

Downloading mobile sportsbook apps on iOS

Apple has traditionally had a more lax attitude towards online betting and gambling apps on its platform. This is why you can find and download online sportsbook apps just by searching for them on the App Store. Once you download and install the app, you can simply log in with your credentials, or open a new account and start using it.

Alternatively, you can access the operator’s mobile website and follow the link to the operator’s App Store page. Before downloading the app, you should make sure that your device meets the app’s minimum system requirements.

Downloading mobile sportsbook apps on Android

Betting apps have only recently been allowed on the Google Play Store. Previously, this meant that users sometimes could not find the app they wanted on Google Play and instead had to download the APK from the operator’s website to install it. This is generally no longer an issue, as most sports betting apps are listed on Google Play, but in case this problem arrises, simply follow the steps below:

First, users have to access the sportsbook’s website on their mobile. The operator will usually direct them towards the app’s download page. Users should download the app file from the operator’s website. Once the download is complete, they should open the file. The device will prompt a security warning about installing apps from “unknown sources”.

Users should then go to their phone’s settings to toggle the option which will allow them to install apps from unknown sources. After the setting is enabled, the installation should proceed as normal.

Advantages of Mobile Sportsbook Apps

These are some of the major advantages of using a sportsbook app as opposed to betting on desktop:

  • Accessibility – this is by far one of the main advantages mobile sportsbook apps have over desktop. App users can bet regardless of where they are, as long as they have internet access (or data connection).
  • Convenience – apps give users around the clock insight into their account and allow them to make changes, place bets and tune in to live streams at all times.
  • User experience – being that apps are designed specifically for mobile, users can usually expect an optimized experience customized for their platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are left with any questions regarding mobile sports betting apps or betting in the U.S. in general, we have prepared this short FAQ section below.

Is sports betting legal in my state?

Online sports betting is currently offered in a limited number of U.S. states. Since the legislation surrounding sports betting is rapidly changing, it would be best to check your local laws or navigate back to our sports betting landing page, bill/law tracker or individual state pages.

What sports can I bet on using the app?

Online sportsbooks usually offer the same number of betting markets across desktop and mobile. Some of the most popular sports for U.S. bettors include basketball (NBA and college), football (NFL), baseball (MLB), hockey (NHL), Soccer (MLS), NASCAR, MMA, boxing, golf, and tennis.

What kinds of bets can users make?

U.S. sportsbooks offer a variety of different betting types. Some of the most popular ones include win bets, parlays, over/under, points spreads, prop bets, futures, and in-play bets. The number of betting types offered will largely depend on individual bookmakers. So, make sure to check which betting types a bookmaker offers before deciding to register.

Can I make bets through the app if I’m in another state?

No. In order to make a bet through a sportsbook app, you will need to be located within the state where online betting is regulated. As state laws regarding online betting differ significantly, sportsbook apps must be fitted with geolocation technology. You’ll have to turn on the location feature on your device. Don’t forget that you should also be of legal gambling age — 21 and up in most states.

How will the sportsbook know if I am located within the state?

Your mobile device contains data about your location. Sportsbook apps use the data to track whether you are within the state borders and limit the service accordingly. If you are playing from a PC/laptop, you will have to rely on the GeoComply plugin in your browser.

Can I access the sportsbook if I am located in another state?

You will be able to access the sportsbook app and even make a deposit most of the time. However, if the state laws forbid online betting, you won’t be allowed to place bets.

Will I need to update the app(s)?

Yes. Operators often issue app updates that contain new features, including bug and security fixes. While some will require you to use the latest version of the app, some will not. However, regardless of whether you are required to, it is always a good idea to keep apps up to date to avoid potential exploits.

Can I make a deposit or withdrawal when using the app?

You most definitely can. Mobile apps will usually give users full control over their account management. This includes banking, i.e. making deposits and withdrawing funds.
