RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl details and preview

  • Date: Tuesday, December 20, 2022
  • Start Time: 7:30pm ET
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Location: FAU Stadium, Boca Raton, Florida
  • Participants: Liberty Flames (8-4) vs Toledo Rockets (8-5)
  • Best Odds: Toledo -3.5 (-106) at FanDuel, Liberty +3.5 (-110) at BetMGM

Liberty Flames +3.5

Since making the jump from FCS to FBS play prior to the start of the 2018 season, the Liberty Flames (8-4, 5-7 ATS) have done more than enough to prove that they can hang with the top competition in college football. They will have yet another opportunity to do so tonight as they take on one of the MAC’s best teams in the Toledo Rockets at the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl.

The Flames finished their 2022 season at 8-4 overall, clinching bowl eligibility for the fourth consecutive season, all under ex-HC Hugh Freeze. Freeze is sure to be one of the main topics of discussion during tonight’s broadcast, as he recently made headlines after accepting the head coaching position at Auburn University. The move reunites Freeze with the Southeastern Conference, where he spent five seasons as the head coach at Ole Miss.

Although each game occurred under Freeze, who will no longer be coaching the Flames, Liberty has had a knack for showing up in bowl games. The Flames are 3-0 all-time in bowls, picking up a pair of Cure Bowl victories in 2019 and 2020 before taking down Eastern Michigan in last year’s LendingTree Bowl.

With Freeze onto bigger and better things, co-defensive coordinator Josh Aldridge will lead the Flames tonight against Toledo. In addition to losing its head coach, Liberty will also be without sophomore LB Ahmad Walker and senior DT Dre Butler, who both recently entered the transfer portal.

Toledo Rockets -3.5

Fresh off the program’s fourth Mid-American Conference Championship victory, the Toledo Rockets (8-5, 5-8 ATS) will look to round out what was an overall successful season with a win at the Boca Raton Bowl over the Liberty Flames.

Toledo’s trip to this year’s Boca Raton Bowl marks the Rockets’ seventh bowl appearance over the last nine seasons, most of which have occurred under current HC Jason Candle. Oddly enough, Candle’s first game as head coach of Toledo took place at the end of the 2015 season at the Boca Raton Bowl in place of Matt Campbell, who beelined for the Iowa State job after leading the Rockets to a 9-1 overall record in the regular season. Candle went on to lead Toledo to a firm 32-17 victory over the No. 24-ranked Temple Owls, who were coached by Matt Rhule at the time.

Back at the same location where it all began for Candle, Toledo opens as a short 3.5-point favorite over the Flames in search of its first bowl victory since that 2015 win over Temple. Toledo will look for a major boost from its duel-threat sophomore QB Dequan Finn, who looked a lot like his usual self in the Rockets’ 17-7 MAC Championship victory over Ohio. After dealing with a string of ankle injuries throughout the regular season, Finn was back to work on the ground against the Bobcats, rushing for 86 yards on 18 attempts to go along with 154 passing yards and a touchdown.
