Oregon Sports Betting – Mobile Sportsbooks, Information, and FAQ

Oregon is known for many things… the Oregon trail, scenic mountains, gorgeous Pacific beaches, doughnuts, craft beer, and it’s the home of three Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Now it’s time to add legal online sports betting to the list. At least for now, as its neighbors struggle to make progress with online betting legislation, Oregon has positioned itself as a sports betting hub on the west coast.

Let’s not burry the lead – online sports betting is legal in the Beaver State, but not without a few caveats to take note of. Oregon has had an exciting and unconventional road to legalization that has led to a unique set of rules that are quite a bit different from other sports betting states.

Tourists and residents alike now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the thrills of safe, legal sports betting in Oregon.

As mentioned above, there are plenty of quirks to this unique market, and we’ll break them all down below including the top mobile apps in the state (hint: there’s only one option, DraftKings Sportsbook, and it’s a good product!), Oregon sports betting promotions, betting markets, and more.

Oregon sports betting history

Sports betting is not a novel concept for some Oregonians. The state of Oregon legalized sports betting in August 2019. However, as determined by state law, all legalized sports betting in Oregon is run through their state lottery.

The Oregon State Lottery partnered with the Scoreboard Sportsbook app in October 2019, and they enjoyed several “quiet” years as the only online sportsbook in town. Generally speaking, Scoreboard was regarded as a mediocre/bad sports betting product and was eventually phased out, with DraftKings Sportsbook taking over in 2022.

Sports bettors should be familiar with the DFS conglomerate, which has morphed into one of the premier sports betting platforms in the United States. As of August 2021, the Oregon Commission officially approved the switch from Scoreboard to DraftKings.

The transition was officially underway on January 18, 2022. Former Scoreboard users had six months to migrate their accounts to DraftKings or else it was terminated.

For or now, if you want to gamble on sports online, it’ll have to be through the state lottery and DraftKings Sportsbook.

Online sportsbooks in Oregon

There is currently just ONE legal online sportsbook operator in the state of Oregon: DraftKings Sportsbook. The Oregon Lottery has monopolized sports betting in its state. It is going through DraftKings for its customers to place wagers.

DraftKings Sportsbook Oregon

DraftKings launched in Oregon in January 2022. Before DraftKings, the Scoreboard app was the state’s sportsbook for their state lottery.

DraftKings Sportsbook OR is an awesome product. It offers a full lineup of betting options, is easy to register and deposit/withdraw with, and the app has been fine tuned after hundreds of thousands of downloads across the country. If you could only pick one sportsbook to have at your disposal, DraftKings Sportsbook may well be the pick.

Scoreboard Sportsbook OR – closed

Scoreboard launched in October 2019 and was the Oregon lottery’s sportsbook for over two years before it was eventually phased out.

We won’t spend too much time describing Scoreboard since it’s a thing of the past. We’ll just say that generally speaking it was regarded as a sub-par online sportsbook that was lacking in nearly all key areas.

Oregonians should be quite pleased that it’s been phased out and that DraftKings, one of the unquestioned leaders in betting across the country, has taken its place.

Oregon online sports betting specifics

Oregon is a unique sports betting state. All licensing for online sports betting in Oregon must be done through the Oregon Lottery. All licensing for retail betting goes through local tribal casinos.

Because the Lottery is in charge of licensing for Oregon online sports betting, it means there’s only one option available. DraftKings Sportsbook is the only statewide online sportsbook in Oregon.

This monopoly system isn’t the best, as a lack of competition can generally hurt offerings, but overall DraftKings is a good product so it could (and has!) be worse.

Betting on college sports is retail only

Another major difference that’s worth mentioning is that betting on college sports over the internet in Oregon is not allowed.

Although some states have banned any wagering on in-state schools, such as New York and New Jersey, Oregon has made an even more drastic move in banning the act altogether… but only for online betting.

Considering how popular college sports are in the Beaver State, the Oregon lottery is undoubtedly missing out on an opportunity for more revenue with this clause.

If you’re interested in placing a bet on college sports, you can still do so in-person at one of the state’s retail sportsbooks.

Professional sports teams in Oregon

Oregonians love their sports. At present there are two professional sports franchises located in Oregon. The Trail Blazers, the Pacific Northwest’s favorite NBA team since the 1970s (Sorry Sonics fans…) and the Portland Timbers of MLS.

NBA: Portland Trail Blazers

  • League: NBA
  • Founding: 1970
  • Stadium: Moda Center
  • Location: Portland, Oregon
  • Betting Partners/Sponsors: FanDuel Sportsbook

The Portland Trail Blazers are the only professional sports team in the major four sports to come from Oregon.

“Rip City” won an NBA title just seven years after they initially joined the league. The 1977 team that won Portland’s lone NBA championship featured Maurice Lucas and Bill Walton.

Head coach Jack Ramsey adopted an offensive-first mentality that paid many dividends in the postseason. The Blazers stormed through the playoffs going 14-5 in route to a win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA finals.

The Blazers have gone back to the NBA finals twice in 1990 and 1992. However, they fell short against the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls, respectively.

Rip City has been the home of a lot of exciting players, including NBA Hall of Famer Clyde “the Glide” Drexler and Terry Porter in the 1990s, Rasheed Wallace and Damon Stoudemire in the 2000s, and more recently, players such as Zach Randolph, Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lilliard have given the Portland faithful plenty to cheer about.

Current signs are pointing towards a potential rebuild, though they were able to convince Lillard to sign a new long term deal.

MLS: Portland Timbers

  • League: MLS
  • Founding: 2009
  • Stadium: Providence Park
  • Location: Portland, Oregon
  • Betting Partners/Sponsors: None

The Portland Timbers are the most recent professional sports champion in Oregon.

The Timbers have played professionally since 1975 and joined the MLS in 2009 as the 18th team in the league. The Timbers were able to win their first MLS Cup in 2015. They have since fallen short twice in 2018 and in 2021.

Ever since their move into the MLS, the Timbers have proven to be feisty and consistently at the top of league standings.

Oregon college teams

We touched on this earlier but unfortunately betting on college sports is only legal at retail sportsbooks in Oregon. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that this changes in the future, but for now the following mega-popular Oregon schools (and any other college!) will be off limits unless you can make the trek to a local tribal casino that has a sportsbook.

NCAA Football: Oregon Ducks

Although Oregon locals and tourists will not be able to place wagers on their college teams at this time, it’s worth covering the college landscape. One of the two major power five colleges resides in Eugene are the University of Oregon Ducks.

One of their claims to fame is Oregon is the home of the founder of Nike, Phil Knight. Many Oregonians remember when Chip Kelly and the Ducks changed the uniform landscape in college football in the 2000s and 2010s with their bright, futuristic uniform combinations.

The Chip Kelly era is long gone for football, but they are still dominant in the Pac-12. However, Oregon college football is in the midst of a transition. Former head coach Mario Cristobal abruptly bolted for his alma mater, Miami. They have since hired Dan Lanning. He just won a national championship as the defensive coordinator of the University of Georgia.

On the hardwood, head coach Dana Altman has been in Eugene since 2010 and has yielded optimal results. In his twelve seasons, Altman has made the NCAA tournament seven times with three Sweet 16 appearances, an Elite eight showing, and a Final Four appearance in 2017.

NCAA Football: Oregon State Beavers

Down in Corvallis resides the rival to the Ducks: the Beavers of Oregon State University.

After years of streaky play, the Beavers are slowly rebuilding their football program behind former star quarterback Jonathan Smith. Smith was named the new head coach of the Beavers going into the 2018 season. He has improved each year besides the pandemic-riddled season.

In 2022, the Beavers are coming off their first bowl appearance since 2013. They will look to build off their 7-win campaign from a year ago.

As football trends up, the basketball team is trending down…rapidly. In 2021, after head coach Wayne Tinkle led the Beavers to their first-ever Pac-12 tournament championship, the Beavers charged through their region to the Elite 8 before falling just short of a Final Four berth. However, 2022 was a vastly different story.

The Beavers b-ball team stumbled to a 3-28 finish where they only won 1 game during the entire conference schedule. Time will tell if the Beavers can return to their winning ways on the court.

The team that has consistently shown the most promise in Corvallis is the Oregon State baseball squad. Although they were defeated this past College World Series, Oregon State has made it to Omaha in 15 of the last 18 seasons, including national championships in 2006, 2007 and most recently, in 2018.

Oregon sports betting promotions

DraftKings is known to have an enticing welcome bonus as well as existing promotions for its users to take advantage of. With that being said, Oregon sports bettors won’t have quite as many bonus options at their disposal due to a lack of sports betting competition.

DraftKings is the only game in town, so there’s no need for them to compete with themselves to bring in customers. If you want to place online sports bets in Oregon, you have to do it with DraftKings.

Regardless, Oregon sports bettors need to familiarize themselves with these betting promotions. Be sure to check the DraftKings Sportsbook promotions page regularly after sign up to see what’s currently on offer.

Neighboring states

For now, Oregon exists in an online sports betting bubble. Despite having just one online sportsbook option, Oregon stands alone in its region. Nevada is the only state that borders Oregon that has access to any sort of online betting.

Additionally, no other state with a border on the Pacific Ocean has given sports betting the OK. For now, persons on the west coast will flock to Oregon to place legal bets.

Washington

Online sports betting is technically legal in Washington, but the legalization is in its infancy.

Although there was a bill signed in March 2020 officially legalizing sports betting, online sportsbooks still have not been able to infiltrate the state.

For now, if you visit Washington, you can place bets at commercial casinos, but there are no online sportsbooks.

Idaho

Sports betting is not legal in Idaho, and lawmakers are in no hurry to change that any time soon. None of the Idaho legislators has submitted a bill that would legalize sports betting since the collapse of PASPA in 2018.

Nevada

As you probably know, it is legal to bet in the mecca of sports betting.

Nevada was the first state to legalize sports betting back in 1931 and was the first state to accept online sports bets in 2010.

If you venture to Nevada and want to create an online betting account, it is one of the few states where you need to register in person at a casino.

California

Sports betting is not legal in the state of California. However, there is a bit of momentum toward the potential for online sports betting to be legalized in California

If California were to legalize sports betting, it would present the biggest sports betting market in the country. Nearly 40 million people residing in its state.

Geolocation

Regular sports bettors will probably be familiar with the term geolocation.

Geolocation is a type of software sportsbooks will use to verify your location. In short, sportsbooks will know you are within the state borders of Oregon so that you can place your money.

There is no way to circumvent not using geolocation software on DraftKings. Any users that use a VPN to connect to their account will be blocked from their sportsbook.

As long as you are within the state borders of Oregon, you will be good to go to place some wagers! One thing to keep in mind is that when you are within a few miles of a state border, your location services may be confused about which state you are in.

Regardless of whether you border a legal online betting state, different states present entirely different markets. Your app will inevitably lag. Make sure you are a few miles away from a state border in Oregon when you use DraftKings, and you should have no problems.

Responsible Gaming resources

Sports can be fun, but they can become addicting very quickly. Moderation can be key in many aspects of life, and sports betting is no different.

When sports betting gets past that point of moderation and you feel yourself losing control, plenty of responsible gaming resources are available at your disposal.

Whether you think you have a gambling addiction, you cannot control your urge to place wagers, or you just want some responsible gaming tools that you can utilize at any time, you should get to know these:

  1. Self-exclusion list – Bettors can place themselves on a self-exclusion list if betting is becoming too tempting. The self-exclusion list is just for you if you want to go cold turkey. You can place yourself on a self-exclusion list. This would ban you from using their sportsbook app for a certain period.
  2. Deposit and session limits – Deposit and session limits are a useful tool for any user. As we talked about above, online sportsbooks can have an addicting nature. With deposit and session limits, bettors can limit the money and time spent on their sportsbooks.
  3. Helplines – If you have a gambling addiction or feel you are going towards that, there are helplines you can call or text at any time. These are trained professionals who can help you receive the support you need. For more information about problem gambling in Oregon and other states, visit the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG)’s treatment/resource finder by state.
