SuperBook Sports was awarded a mobile sports betting license Wednesday morning by the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC).
The Maryland Lottery still needs to perform controlled demonstrations with SuperBook Sports before the operator can go live, but it’s nearing a launch in the state. SuperBook Sports is currently live in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Jersey, and Tennessee.
SuperBook Sports is partnered with Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles, and the operator plans to have a sports betting lounge at Camden Yards open in 2023. Crab Sports, a local mobile sports betting operator partnered with Gaming Innovation Group, was also awarded its mobile sports betting license Wednesday by the SWARC.
“During our meeting today and I suspect in future meetings, we’ll start to consider some smaller operators and some that are more entrepreneurial in nature,” Kimberly Copp, a lawyer with the law firm that aids the SWARC, said Wednesday. “These smaller sports wagering operators are not only envisioned by Maryland sports wagering law, but are fully encouraged by the law.”

On the retail side, Greene Turtle Sports Bars (betPARX) in Canton and Towson were awarded licenses for retail sportsbooks. Michael’s on the South River in Riva also earned a retail license, despite pushback from community members. Diversity plans for Bally’s, Long Shot’s Hagerstown, and WynnBET were also approved at Wednesday’s meeting.
Eight mobile sportsbooks now live
Betfred launched its mobile sportsbook in the state last week, becoming the eighth digital operator to go live in Maryland. Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and PointsBet are also up and running.
Bally Bet and WynnBET are expected to launch in Maryland soon as well, although no go-live date has been announced for either. It’s also expected that Fanatics Sportsbook, which recently opened a retail location in Maryland at FedEx Field, will soon launch a mobile platform.
Mobile sports betting went live in Maryland in late November 2022, and over $400 million was wagered in the state in January. Nearly $500 million was wagered in December, although tax revenue generated has been dwarfed by promotional deductions.
It’s possible that Maryland bettors could have access to 20 mobile sportsbooks by the end of 2023.
