It’s crunch time at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The final matches of group play begin Tuesday, and that means every goal could have a direct impact on who advances to the round of 16 and who goes home after three matches in soccer’s biggest tournament.
The action in Group B figures to be fairly intense as all four teams still technically have a chance to advance to the knockout round. While both Iran and the United States are looking up at England in the table, both can book a spot in the round of 16 with a victory. Their match, along with the England-Wales contest, will simultaneously kick off at 2:00pm ET.
With an event as special as this one underway, BetMGM Sportsbook is stepping onto the pitch with an exclusive World Cup sign-up bonus offer for all new users. Create a brand new account using the BetMGM bonus code HANDLEWC and instantly turn $10 into $200 if any team scores a goal.

It is very simple for the United States: Win and advance to the round of 16; lose or draw and its World Cup adventure ends after three matches. The Yanks have claimed points in each of their first two contests with a 1-1 draw against Wales followed by a scoreless stalemate against England. The U.S. acquitted itself well against the Three Lions on Friday, with Christian Pulisic positive in attack and Tyler Adams an effective box-to-box destroyer, but lacked a clinical edge in the final third that could have proven decisive.
Gregg Berhalter has his entire roster available for selection as starters Sergiño Dest, Weston McKennie, and Tim Ream all avoided picking up yellow cards against England that would have ruled them out for this contest. After making only one change in his starting XI for Friday’s draw, Berhalter may opt for a more attack-minded group versus Team Melli knowing the U.S. needs all three points to advance. That means attacking midfielder Gio Reyna could make his first start and striker Jesus Ferreira could make his first appearance after Josh Sargent and Haji Wright failed to distinguish themselves leading the line in the first two matches.
The U.S. reached the knockout round in their previous two World Cup appearances in 2010 and 2014 prior to missing the tournament four years ago. The last time it went home after group play was in 2006 when it lost 2-1 in the final match to Ghana needing a victory to advance. History has not been kind to the Yanks in the third group match — they have lost seven of eight such matches, with Landon Donovan’s dramatic late winner versus Algeria in 2010 the only breakthrough.
Iran enters this match in second place on three points after a dramatic 2-0 victory over 10-man Wales on Friday. A draw against the U.S. would be enough to see Team Melli through to the round of 16 for the first time in their history provided the Welsh do not upset England.
Substitute Roozbeh Cheshmei and Ramin Rezaeian both scored deep into second-half stoppage time as Team Melli took full advantage of playing 11-on-10 starting in the 86th minute. Iran got its deserved rewards when Cheshmei found the back of the net with a 25-yard strike in the 98th minute and Rezaeian secured the three points with a composed finish on the counter three minutes later.
Iran coach Carlos Queiroz will not have the services of Alireza Jahanbakhsh for this match as the Feyenoord midfielder picked up yellow cards in each of the previous two matches. Jahanbakhsh started against England and came off the bench versus Wales.
First-choice goalkeeper Alireza Berinvand, however, could return between the sticks after missing the Wales victory due to a concussion suffered in a heavy collision with teammate Majid Hosseini early in the loss to England. Queiroz could opt to stick with Hossein Hosseini over Berinvand and is sweating the status of forward Sardar Azomun, who is likely a match-time decision after aggravating a calf injury that limited him to 68 minutes versus Wales.
Iran, which is participating in its third consecutive World Cup and sixth overall, came agonizingly close to the knockout round four years ago in Russia, winning its first group match before eventually finishing behind Spain and Portugal. Team Melli, who were thumped 6-2 by England in their group opener, may have to lean more heavily on Mehdi Taremi — who scored both goals in the loss to the Three Lions — in attack if Azomun is unable to go.
The teams have met once previously at the World Cup, with Iran recording a 2-1 upset in France in 1998 for its first World Cup victory. Hamid Estili and Mehdi Mahdavikia scored goals on either side of halftime before Brian McBride pulled one back late for the U.S.
